Autodim exterior mirrors in the daylight

I was parked facing the sun, and put a window shade in the windshield. Then I was sitting in the car listening to the radio and noticed that since the front sensor was covered the car thought it was darker out with bright light coming from behind only. I was surprised how dark the exterior mirrors actually got. I haven't had both auto dim exterior mirrors since my 2002 Town and Country Limited.
