2019 Map Update Question

Hi All,

I took advantage of the recent $50 discount on a map update for my 2015 WK2's Uconnect system. I now have it in hand. I've a question: Rather than leave the engine running, at idle, for an hour or more, can I simply place the ignition in "Run," leave, lock the doors, and come back to check it from time-to-time? Will it stay in "Run," left on its own, for the required time? With my keyfob perhaps out of range?

I'm certain I've seen this discussed before, but I'll be darned if I can find it, now that I actually need it

Unattended, the Jeep will sleep at some point, maybe 10 minutes. I think if you leave a rear door open it takes longer to sleep. It has been discussed before, but I can't find it either. The process may be different for different radios.

My understanding is that, for best results, leave the engine running when the software is being updated or you have to start over. The map update can be interrupted and it will just continue where it left off.

Thanks, CC. I'll just go out, put the Jeep in "Run," lock the doors and walk away. See what happens. In fact: I'll do that right now.

Update #1: It stayed on for at least twenty minutes, but less than thirty. Now doing test #2: In "Run," doors unlocked, keyfob left in Jeep.

Update #2: Stayed on more than thirty minutes, but less than 45. Now doing test #3: In "Run," driver's side back door open, keyfob with me.

Update #3: No improvement over the last test. I'll try going out and opening/closing the door every fifteen minutes.

Update #4: *sigh*... I guess leaving it running is the only option. That really sucks, IMO

That’s where a battery tender comes in handy. I leave mine on during updates while on the tender for no battery drain. No wasted fuel!

I have one. Battery drain isn't the problem. Problem is I've found no way for the thing to stay on short of leaving the engine running.

And wasted fuel isn't my issue with leaving it running. Sitting on idle for sixty minutes isn't good for the engine.

I think OBD scanner software like AlfaOBD or AppCar can set the Jeep to run mode (maybe called update mode) for an extended time.

I've already spent more than the time to apply the update trying to figure out a way around that. I'm just going to leave it running and be done with it.

Maybe some day auto manufacturers would get into the 21st century.

FYI, when I updated the maps on my 2015 a couple of years ago, it took 90 minutes (engine idling, as you have discovered). For much of the process, there was no indication that anything was happening. Perhaps they've improved on that with this latest update.

There have been quite a few usability improvements since model year 2015, as well as a few missteps with over the air updates.

Thatís interesting and like ColdCase says, it must be different for the various radios. My Ď14 is the Model RA4 - Uconnectô 8.4AN (with navigation) and does not time out in the ďRUNĒ position as long as the tender is supplying power.

Dunno, the radio update TSBs require 2011-2013s ignitions to be on only, but recommend a charger be attached to maintain the battery voltage. 2014 and newer went to USB updates, I think, and the TSBs require the engine to be running during the procedure, the time seems to varies by model year and update. All seem to suggest not opening or closing doors or touch the radio until directed to do so.

Same for me, with this update. The display suggested it'd be around 70 minutes. It was at least 90.

They have not.

Thanks, everybody, for your feedback!

Oh wow, I did not know that we had to pay for updated maps. I have a 2018, will it tell me on the display when new maps are available?

This is normal for factory navigation systems, TTBOMK.

Dunno. My 2015 did not. I got emailed notifications of a sale from FCA. Repeated notifications.

I did get a notification of some OTA firmware updates to UConnect a couple days ago, when I shut off the ignition after parking when I got home, though. First time I'd seen that.

I'd forgotten all about that. Everything seemed to be working correctly when I went out to fetch carry-out, last evening, so I guess nothing got broken

Are there noticable improvements or updates to the new nav maps?
