2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Air Conditioner System Issue

Good afternoon! I was wondering if anyone has experienced any problems with their new Grand Cherokee. I turn on the air conditioner (automatic start/stop is switched to off) and it will randomly blow warm air while on. I have taken it for service twice now and both times they tell me that this is the condenser and system cycling on. This happens frequently, sometimes within minutes. I was finally told today, after my truck was at the dealership for three days, that this is perfectly normal and a result of my AC blowing too cold and shutting itself off and then turning back on. I have been told that this is a normal condition but this isn't my first new car and I have never seen anything like this. It's not hot air - it's just a blast to your face of warm air followed by the set temperature. Coolant levels are normal and they have claimed to check all the systems and the recirculation but haven't found anything wrong. It's not throwing any codes either. I can't help but wonder if the AC is really blowing that cold (which it doesn't seem like)- isn't that a problem in itself that can be fixed? The technician said that these vehicles aren't tested too much in warmed weather and I'll admit that it's humid here in Texas but it was all of 87 degrees outside. I'm hardly pushing this truck to it's limit - or am I?

Andyzed likes this.

There was a couple threads on this subject recently. When I get back to a computer I'll try to find them.

I have a brand new GC and have the same issue. The compressor is kicking off on max ac manual which it SHOULD NOT do. I did not take it to the dealer yet but i will be dam sure the fix it as i have been in the auto industry most of my life.

I thought I saw something just a short time ago and can't find it. They changed the way the AC works for the 2014 model year and there have been some comments that it doesn't work as well as previous years. Most of the comments were about auto mode. It seems that if you turn the fan up in manual mode for awhile, till the system stabilizes, and then switch back to auto it works better. Don't think thats what you are seeing.

There were some reports of low factory fill, dunno if it would be worthwhile to have the dealer or an independent AC shop check.

This make 100% sense as a low fill would cause the compressor to cycle when it should not, correct? also do they still have orifice tube/expansion valve? that would do it even if the system was full if my brain remembers correctly..

I just can't believe the run around I'm getting. They said the freon was the right amount and they checked all the levels initially. We bought an electronic temperature gauge and the temperature jumps a full 10 degrees when it blows the warm air - quite noticeable. I got an email from Jeep letting me know that because of a survey I took that I have a case manager and I thought, EXCELLENT! She said she noted my issues and my case is now closed. Uh, what? Not useful to say the least.

It sounds like the auto setting is still on even though you said it's not. You could try the trick of disconnecting the battery overnight and letting it reset. These jeeps are basically big computers and sometimes they need a reboot.

Perhaps one of the airflow (mix) doors is slow or sticky and sticks in one position or another when its trying to adjust air flow.

I've had vehicles that would cycle the compressor on and off for economy. They would blow maybe a little warmer air for a short time, but not 10 degrees warmer.

Its possible its normal for a 2016, I don't know. Not normal for 2011-2013 vintage.

You could try cycling through all the settings, defrost/max/heat/vent... perhaps loosen it up.

Hey christyhasajeep, I'm sorry your case was closed prematurely. If you'd like to send me your VIN, I can review further.

The recirculation flap opens at high revs allowing outside air to enter in.

Has anyone had this issue? I keep having this issue as I rev up the engine and get all the outside air in. I had been to the dealership and they did mention that there was a flash for it. TSB here refers - http://www.wk2jeeps.com/tsb/tsb_wk2_2400316.pdf.

They said they did flash it, but then I had all my memory seat settings lost, and easy access lost as well, so I went back. Then they said they reset the memory seat functions, but the airconditioning issue is back.

Are you sure that the compressor isn't cutting out with opening the throttle, and the air just feels warmer. The flap is driven by an electrical motor, not vacuum.

I bought my '16 just over two months ago. I notice that on really hot days it takes the cabin a while to cool down. So based on this thread I took the Jeep in today to have the A/C checked. The tech evacuated the system, recharged it, ran tests, etc. The system was 0.5 oz. low on refrigerant (I think it holds 1.25 lbs). The invoice states that the system is "working as designed."

My wait time was 3 hours. What took so long? It seems that the tech decided to take care of 3 TSBs (ABS, TCM, and PCM) while I was there. Fine with me!

Get his name & ask for him specifically the next time you need service. Mechanics like that are hard to come by.

Thanks everyone, I think these are all very helpful solutions but I'm at a loss since my dealer claims nothing is wrong. I think my next step will be to take it to another dealership or even a repair shop and just pay a diagnostic fee.
