2014 Overland - Remove CD player

Does any one know if you can unplug and remove the cd player from the centre console? Comes standard on this model and i dont use it. Id assume as its an option on lower models, that the player is just added to the console, so there is a good chance that there wont be a gaping hole when its removed.

CD player is optional on all trim levels. There is an excellent "how to" on removal of the player and replacing it with the non-cd equipped console on one of the other forums.

Yup, the CD is not "standard", but dealers may have ordered stock with it installed. The article that the previous poster mentioned also includes the parts requirement to give you back a "normal" center console, if I recall. Just removing the CD leaves you with a big hole under the lid...

Why do you want to remove it?

I want to remove mine also, as I didn't want the single CD and it is a waste of space in the center console for me personally.

When I get to it, plan to remove the CD player.

The CD option on the MY14 JGC takes up a substantial portion of the entire center console that would normally be available for storage and convenience. While a few folks out there consider it a "must have", a larger number of folks have gone to other formats of storing content, such as on SD cards or on their portable devices, such as smartphones. So when they buy a JGC "off the lot" (or mistakenly ordered it with the CD option), they may want to remove it. But again, if that decision is made, there are some parts that need to be ordered to replace the CD unit so that the console can be used "normally".

I am possibly interested in going the other way...ADDING a CD player to our 2014 JGC. Anyone know if a wiring harness is already run and ready, or will adding the CD require fishing the wires and hooking them up to the UConnect head?

Sounds like you may be able to get the required parts secondhand from folks who don't want the CD player.... Probably a lot cheaper than buying new parts from the dealer.

I was worried about no CD when we ordered our Overland.
Then I learned how to put every CD I own on a 8 gig Thumbdrive with room to spare.
CCR and Buddy Holley and some early Sun Records doesn't take up much room.

Would anyone be able to point me to the "other" thread that has the detailed instructions on removing the cd player from my GC? Also, if anyone would like to swap their basket and console lid for my cd player, basket, and console lid I'd be up for that, straight across!

With humble regards to nikon858, from another forum.

"Tools
Phillips head driver
Small flat blade driver
10mm Socket wrench

68212884AA is the part I ordered.

Open the lid and pull the black plastic piece on the back up (it comes off easily) remove the 3 screws holding the arm rest on, the two screws on the back of transmission release (thing with orange strap on it) and two screws on either side of transmission release.

Open the usb port/sd card cubby in the front then carefully lift the trim panel surrounding the gear shifter. I started on the sides till I could get my fingers under the back. The panel will not raise that high as the gear shifter surround prevents it. There is a little bit of left/right movement which will be enough to get the rest of the screws.

I only have 2wd so no control panel and was able to lift out the coin holder, it made it easier to get to two of the screws but may be doable if left in.

There are then two screws holding the left/right trim panels on and two screws holding the front of the bin down.

Move both front seats all the way forward and with a small screw driver remove one cover on either side exposing a 10mm bolt.

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image.

Pull the rear panel with usb power a/c vents back, wires are short so it will not go that far. Just enough to release it from the side panels.

Undo both bolts, the side panels should now lift straight up exposing two screws on either side of the bin holding it down.

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image.

With the seats still back remove the exposed screws.

Move the seat back and down to get the screws on the side holding the bin down.

The bin should now be free.

Pull up on the transmission release and undo the clip holding the cable to the side (sorry no photo)

With the out of the way the bin will come out, remove the connectors for the 12v socket and the CD player.

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image.

Install the new bin hooking up the 12v connection

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image.

And reverse instructions to re install.

You will have two screws left over as the big bin only has 1 screw on either side of it.

There is a led light in the new bin and it comes with a micro switch, but I couldn't figure out where to install it. So for now I did not hook up the light."

I'm removing my cd player soon and putting in the new bin.
Does anyone know how to connect the light that comes with the new box?

I was planning to order my 2018 Limited with a CD player, until I saw how much room it occupied in the storage compartment. My 1997 JGC had an aftermarket AM/FM/Sirius radio in the dash, plus a six disc CD player which I installed in the rear cargo area. It worked by both pushbutton and hand held remote control. I wish that this was an option on the current Jeeps, but I don't think that you could integrate it into the existing radio/Uconnect control system.

Thumbs up

Do you know how long it takes to do the bin swap? I'm going to do it today if there's time.

My 2017 Summit has a DVD player and screens behind seats. I want my center console back, bought this used, didn't order it. Any help here? I seems to find one article about removing " CD player" I'm sure CD and DVD player in the WK2 are the same close to the same device and location
