2011 Jeep GC Ownership Cost - Listed Repairs

Heres a glimpse into owning a 2011 GC Summit Edition. My wife loves this vehicle. I say its a money pit, even though it's nice. We do plan on keeping it despite this list.

5 years ownership

1. Driver Side Air Strut - leaking
2. Passenger Air Strut - leaking
3. Water Pump - leaking
4. Air Compressor - compressor burned out.
5. Steering Rack . - leaking
6. Driver Side Headlight - leaking
7. Passenger Side headlight - leaking
8. BI-XENON bulbs - numerous
* have to remove bumper, paid dealer

Current Issues:

1. Leaking Oil Pan

2. Leaking Bell Housing - I think

3. Thump sound when starting from a dead stop, or accelerating
* happening for at least 6 months
* I CHANGED ALL DIFFS AND TRANSFER CASE fluid but didn't fix

4. with the Jeep going 5 mph without pushing pedal , on its own, you get a
continuous slight thump sounds every 5 seconds or so.

5. Clanging sound when hitting bumps. happened after steering column and compressor fix.. they looked at it again, but it never got fixed correctly.

6. Weak Cranking
* I already replaced the spark plugs, it's the original battery from 2011.

My advice, do your own fluids and spark plugs. Front Diff, Rear Diff, Transfer Case, Spark plugs. Its easy to do especially with suspension raised or lowered.

Rough list. The rack and pinion leak is probably a bad motor mount. On my 12 overland I'm at $8.5k in dealer repair bills in one yr so I know your pain. I've has my whole air suspension system replaced, motor mounts, thermostat, win module, keyfobs, and dash. Most was under extend warranty but still have an out of pocket for the diagnostic fee and fluids or miscellaneous items you get to foot for. The jeep only has 53k miles on it. Definitely selling it before I run out of my warranty

We had a 2011 Limited with 85,xxx miles and this issue... Dealer replaced transfer case under extended warranty, but that didnít fix it. I never figured it out, but was leaning toward replacing the motor mounts next. Never pursued further, d/t being hit by someone and traded it in on something else.

I am glad you said that about the transfer case. They are not cheap by any means. I'm going to do the motor mounts sometime soon. I might get roped into doing them when we fix the oil pan leak. You unbolt the motor mounts apparently.

I also was hoping it might be a stuck caliper or something. I doubt it, but I will do the brakes soon. an early 2020 DIY job.

Oddly, I took the jeep in for a rounded oil drain plug and for them to perform the oil change.

That thump symptom is GONE completely! It has been two days and its not present at all. Even my wife has noticed.

I need to see if my oil pan is still leaking. I think it was a little low on oil and somehow caused that noise. I really cant explain it.

SYMPTOM 3 RESOLVED. 3. Thump sound when starting from a dead stop, or accelerating

resolution: tire rotation

rotated the tires and did an oil change. the thump sound is gone. I wonder if the lug nuts were loose?

Thatís awesome! Sure glad to hear it.

Maybe weíll never know, but Iím puzzled... what about an oil change would have an effect on the ďthump ď...

2011 export Laredo,

Only had normal servicing
And recalls done, including left hand head (3.6l)

Only problem clunk from rear shocks, which after changing shocks and top mounts persists

Otherwise very reliable 102,000 kilometers

Im an idiot.. I looked at the parperwork and they did a tire rotation as well. Maybe loose lug nut? Wheel not seated properly??

any idea?

I had a similar problem on a Civic years ago. The dealer that did the tire rotation forgot to tighten the lugs on one wheel. Got a nice clunk.

On a slightly different note, a couple of years ago, my boss had his Tundra in for servicing. The dealer forgot to put the lugs on the front wheel. The front wheel came off at the first intersection. He ended up with a new truck...

I'm not even at a year of ownership with my 2012 Overland. I have to agree - this one is a complete money pit. We bought it with 80k and we are only at 90k now.

Here is what I have done and what still needs work.

Exhaust manifold bolts and seal (drivers side)
Rack and pinion
upper control arm (drivers side)
lower control arm/bushing and sway bar links (passenger side)
front air suspension lines, both sides
leather dashboard
multiple air suspension recalibration/resets and software updates
Upper control arm (passenger side)
Alignment (to fix the crooked steering wheel)
Exhaust manifold bolts (passenger side)
Exhaust manifold seal (passenger side)
Exhaust manifold (passenger side)

Here is what is still needing repair

Air suspension air leak (dealership needed a lot more time to locate the leak)
Air compressor is running to long and might fail due to the air leak
Service air suspension immediately light (possible sensor failures or whole controller/computer failure)
Air Suspension wont raise (probably due to all the other issues)

Sounds like it was beat pretty bad by the previous owners and you need to find a tech that knows suspensions. It would have saved you some time and aggravation.

I was born to party, but I am forced to work

Yeah I was thinking that too after all the problems but the Jeep was spotless inside and out. I even crawled underneath it to see if there was anything and it was squeaky clean under as well.

It came from Scottsdale, Az so there couldn't have been too much beating there.

At what age to problems generally start showing up with this like the suspension and what not?

It seems to be time rather than miles in a lot of cases Iím seeing.
