Thinking about the Coast Guard

I'm former Army and I'm wondering if there are any Coasties on here former or active and what jobs are the best. Also tell me anything to watch for or know about.

I was in the coast guard. It was the best experience of my life. It was real hard at times, but I still feel nothing but love for the USCG. Go for it!

Do you want to be inside or outside? On land or sea or a mix of both? Aviation rates ? There are some stations in Hawaii you could tour.

lol same here. i went to an out of state football/party school (expensive) and watched too many football games and partied too hard then ended up back at home at a local school. she went to a school where she cant even use a cell phone.

its not easy at all to get into the USCGA, and from what i saw when i was up there when she moved in its gonna be 4 years of hell for them.

There are tons of stations both land and sea in the South East. Check out the units there in Hawaii, take a tour. Get a feel for what they do. I spent a few years cruising the Bahamas stationed out of St. Pete Forida, then wound up in Virginia at a group ( controls several stations over a large area). I've done land and sea, both have good and bad parts. There are some jobs or rates that are predominately land or sea.

If you like working with firearms then go for Gunners Mate. If you want to deal with a lot of crap go for Boatswain's Mate, If you like working with your hands and machinery then go for Machinest Mate (I think the puddle jumpers errr CG have them).

I am former Navy and switched to Army. Went from being a Boatswain's Mate to an Infantryman. lol. To think they tried to send me to OCS.
