How long will 3.7L last?

Hy guys and gals, my girlfriend wants a liberty KJ and all the ones we are finding in our price range have 100+ thousand miles. I was just wondering how long these jeeps will go for and if there is anything I should look for in buying one? Sorry I know nothing about these jeeps, I'm a Cherokee guy so any help would be great! Thanks y'all!!!

If it was properly maintained it shouldn't be a problem same as with any other engine. Check for maintenance records and give it a good test drive.

There was a recall on the LBJ's and they should have been replaced under warranty.

I know of several here in Ohio that have 150,000-175,000 and no problems at all. Still running strong.

If you don't want one with 100k+ miles I'd keep searching... my brother got an 05 with 45k miles on it... as for the engine itself it's a very reliable engine.. especially for the Liberty - it's like they were made for each other. Kinda like how the relationship between the Hemi and WK. Anyway, please make sure you get the 4x4.. (they typically have much better resale)... and if you do choose to get the 4x4.. make sure you test drive the vehicle and it's 4x4. Of all things to do, make sure it has recently received it's 4x4 inspection and service - especially with high-mileage 4wheel drive vehicles.

I'd check everything good with the cooling system. Make it it's working normal and nothing is broken (leaking Radiator, bad radiator cap, leaking Water Pump,).

My 2c..

Saw an 02 KJ for sale online with 300k on the original drivetrain, but they said it was starting to idle rough, but still ran great.
70k on my 06, and 75k on my sisters 03, and so far no issues and in two plus years of her having hers only one freak issue of the PCM shorting itself out while on vacation with it, ended up being a $900 repair since we were on the road and didn't have any other option.. But haven't ever heard of that really happening to anyone else before.
And I've had mine for just over a year and beat on it pretty good without anything other then maintence.

Currently have 200k on mine, runs strong and doesnt burn or leak a drop of oil. I drive 110 miles daily to and from work, not to mention all the camping & hunting trips it sees.
Proper maintainance is the key to longevity.

I bought a Jeep Liberty Renegade with mileage a little above 250,000 recently. I'm worried that its engine may not last.

Wow...old thread.

All depends on how it was cared for by the prior owner.....such as regular oil changes, proper maintenance done etc.

You may be right, 250,000 is pushing it. Do you know the history of it? How does it run? Any noises, smoking? Did you check the compression? Maybe if it was well maintained and not abused it could have a fair bit of life yet. If its all good now then keep it that way. Pay attention to the cooling system, overheating is fatal.

Use a high quality synthetic oil and change it frequently and it should last as long as others. The 3.7L has issue with undersized oil passages that can clog from sludge if oil change intervals are too long or if a non-synthetic oil is used.

I got my 06 KJ in 09 when it had about 30K on it. Now at about 142K. Runs fine. Synthetic oil changes every 3K. Only "engine" problem I've had was a broken valve spring. When the shop took it apart to replace the spring, they were amazed how clean the engine was. Apparently they're known to be "sludgy" when the oil isn't changed frequently, but mine was very clean.
Only other problem has been 2 water pumps (one wore out, replacement was bad from factory, replaced under warranty), and a bad coil pack ($25 to buy and replace myself). Watch for cracks in the plastic radiators. They typically crack near the top, so they only blow out fluid when you're driving, and you may not see any fluid where you park, but you'll notice you're losing coolant somewhere.
