Coolant Expansion Tank.

Hi. I was getting some leaks from my coolant tank. Replacing the cap didn't do it so I ordered a replacement tank from Rock. I noticed a hole (Vent?) on the back. I plugged the openings and blew in one and air came out the back vent. Shouldn't this be a closed system, up to 16 PSI (the cap rating)? There was also the same hole on the old one. Anyone know why it's there?

From the cap there's a hose that runs to the bottom of the right expansion tank and from the expansion tank there's a hose that runs to the top of the radiator just above the top radiator hose.

Right. However, if you remove the tank from the firewall, you'll see one more opening on the back (against the firewall). That's the one I'm wondering about.

That side of the expansion tank must be to allow for air expansion either from the reservoir or the radiator . I've never seen fluid in there or fluid coming out from that hole.

Thanks Benibiker. After nearly two weeks, I'm not leaking and the level is holding steady. Anyway, if anyone else has to swap out their tank, hopefully they'll find this post and not freak out.
