Winch/Transmission question

The other day I was talking to my dad about the new winch I got. He used to work at a phosphate mine where they were always pulling something or other around with a winch. He asked me if I was aware of how having 10k pounds of force pulling against the transmission would affect the trans. As this is the first time I've owned a winch, I hadn't thought about it before.

So... I think I need a winch 101 class and I'm going to hit up my local clubs to see if they can provide some real world training but, for now I gotta know... is it inappropriate to pull something (say tree stump) from a parked vehicle (either auto in park or manual with gears engaged)? Is it harmful to the transmission?

Use the parking brake, chocks and put it in neutral.

Just don't put it in park (auto) or in gear (manual) and you should be fine

You want to put as little stress on the drivetrain as possible either by holding the brake pedal, or by tieing off to an anchor. Usually, if I am dragging logs up the side of the mountain at camp, I will tie off to a tree, block the tires and leave it in neutral. If there is nothing to tie off to I will hold the brake, or have someone else hold the brake while I winch.

I have plans to install a winch brake that uses the service brake.

Personally, I always winch with the engine running. If I'm the stationary object in the equation (me pulling something) I'll be in neutral standing on the brakes with a light food on the gas keeping the revs up a bit. Always in neutral.

Yeah always keep the engine running when ever possible. I have a hydraulic winch so i dont need to bring the engine speed up as the pump makes the ample flow at idle to drag logs and such. But even electric guys should keep it running at a high idle (aka 1000-1400 RPM) so the alternator can produce the power needed to take most if not all the load off of the battery.
