tj towing question

i have a 06tj, 4"sl,33's,488's od auto, 6cyl. my question is how well on the hi-way would it pull a 6x12 enclosed trailer loaded with harley and camping gear? i know it wont sag the jeep, it will be a gas hog, but with the added wind resistance will it ever go 70mph? Im wanting to go 2500 miles round trip.

Towing capacity is 2000 pounds, it will sag, and it will not handle very well. Cross winds will blow you around, gas milage will suck badly, and unless the trailer has brakes it will not stop very well.

Don't even try it. You'll never keep that thing on the road. Jeep TJs are very lightweight and not designed for towing. I wouldn't even recommend a 2000lb towing capacity. I use mine to tow around my kayak or a little 4x6 open utility trailer but that's it. And even thats not pretty. You need a pickup truck or SUV.

I agree I think you need a truck or something with a bigger motor.

I have a 6x12 enlosed trailer I tow ALL THE TIME with my TJ. I have 4.56 gears 33 and 35s, I6 and a 5 spd. I have towed with it as heavy as over 3k from CA to MO. Steering, stopping, and gas mileage sucked. I have towed the trailer countless times with , loads up to about 2k and my TJ did fine. Towing any trailer will require you pay exrta attention.

i pull my 13'6" wooden skiff behind my '97 tj, w/ 6cyl/5spd

the little boat is a burden & i wouldn't consider doing great distances on the interstate

just run the US hwys & state hwys, where i can feel comfortable @ 60-65mph±

the greatest issue, IMHO, is stopping in an emergency

i do, however, pull my DL650 on the 4x10 utility trlr, down the big road

the 4x10 trails directly behind the tj & isn't effected too much by wind

i tried to post pics(no pic, never happened) but this forum wont allow me to upload them

pulling my 6x12 behind my tj was quite sporty, even empty

stopping it bordered on SCARY

steering was equally SCARY

just this old man's 2˘ worth

sw

never step off to drink then re-mount & ride upstream
