Come Alongs

So i can't afford a winch and I figured a come along would be good.

What should I look for? Anything inparticular. They are pretty cheap on ebay.

Anyone used one?

Don't waste your time. Just get a tow strap or save for a harbor freight winch.

I have used a come-a-long to pull as stuck Jeep out. Yes, it was slow andhard work. Yes, it was dangerous. Yes, I was stupid to be wheeling alone. However, it was better than being stuck. Personally, I'd rather have a come-a-long and plenty of chain than nothing at all.

Get one. They are good to have with you even if you have a winch.

I think theyre excellent tools to have, Of course you should have tow straps and if youre wheelin with another vehicle try that first. But a lot of times all a stuck vehicle needs is a little bit of pressure on it. You dont neccesrily need to extract the vehicle with just the come-a-long.

Ive been using them all of my life with welding and such, I never though about using one in a stuck situation; I guess it could be that litte bit you need.
OTOH A chain comealong can really crank some power, but theyre also quite expensive.

1986 Comanche, 4x4, 2.8l v6
1989 Mustang LX Coupe, h/c/i, bolt ons, 5lug
have to break in engine and trans, then hitting E-town and a dyno

ive got a regular cable come-along, and ive seen it pull out more cars behind my house then anything else. its slow..yes, but usually all the car needs is a few inches before it has traction again..now my friend has a chain come-along, and weve literally pulled small trees (roots and all) out of the ground with that. yes not the safest thing to have, but they do work great

In emergencies you can always use your Hi-Lift jack as a come-along. A good demo available a few post back.
