8,000 lb vs 10,000 lb winch question

I'm looking into getting a winch, and i'm on a budget so money is an issue. I've decided to go with the Chicago Electric winch.

Now the 8,000 lb one can be had for $240; and the 10,000 lbs one for $320.
But the 10k one comes with a roller fairlead ($30) and the 8k doesn't, so there is only a $50 price difference if I were to get the 8k plus a roller fairlead

My question is, is the 10k winch worth the extra $50?

8,000 lb winch
Line speed (in feet per minute): 11.0 FPM @ 2000 lbs., 6.0 FPM @ 6000 lbs., 4.5 FPM @ 8000 lbs.

4.1 HP, Gear ratio: 210:1

20-11/16" L x 3-1/8" W x 6-15/16"

10,000 lb winch
Line speed (in feet per minute): 6.56 FPM @ 2000 lbs., 4.92 FPM @ 6000 lbs., 4.26 FPM @ 8000 lbs., 3.28 FPM @ 10,000 lbs.

4.8 HP, Gear ratio: 294 :1

21.9'' L x 6'' W x 6.8'' H

For only $ 50.00 more I'd get the 10,000 LB winch. But if your budget is really tight the 8,000 LB is more than adequate. The nice thing about the Harbor Freight Winches is that they come with the Winchplate & Roller.

The 8,000 pound is enough power for your jeep. Also, you may want the faster line speed.

Everything I need to fix on the heep: ABS indicator, speed 4 on the blower fan, torn softop over driver's head, both seat release/tilt cables, missing center cap on spare, broken under hood light, wire up the CB, wiring problem with the reverse lights, broken bottle jack, leaky front and rear pinion seals, loose trackbar relocation bracket, torn drivers seat on the side, broken center console lock, lost nuts for door hinges, squeaking centering ball, loose parking brake cable, oil change and rotate the tires.

I had the Chicago 8k and used it a few times. Worked perfect and never had a glitch.

Then bought the 10k and used it a few times. Works perfect and never had a glitch with it either.

I went to the 10k Just in case.

I paid about 320 for the 10k also.

I'd go with the 10k.

Been driving the same TJ since 2001.

Agree, for $ 320.00 you can't go wrong.

Awesome, yea the extra $50 isn't a deal breaker. Sounds like i'll go with the 10k, thanks.

How much does the 10K weigh?

My thinking is:

1. You're already on spacers so the option of putting a couple spacers up front to level your Jeep out after the winch is out the window. Gotta keep the Jeep level.

2. You'll never need 10K pound force for your Jeep. The only time you'll actually use that extra 2K is if you have to pull out a Suburban or Expedition or something (and you'll need an anchor vehicle too). Why spend the money?

I wouldn't think there is a significant weight difference between the 2. I set a 10k on the front of my cj5, I don't think it even moved.

For essentially the same price, why not? But I had a 25% coupon when I bought mine, I think I paid 250 for it.

I'm the only gay eskimo.

One thing more about comparing similar winches with differing winching capacities... generally speaking, a larger capacity winch will usually require significantly fewer amperes from the Jeep's electrical system when winching the same load as a smaller winch. The trade-off is knowing when the larger capacity winch's added weight is enough to make it a little too heavy for a Wrangler.

When you have a choice, buy American made.
