Rear hatch door interchangeability ?

Anyone know what other year Cherokee rear hatch door will interchange with a 1996 Cherokee ? My '96 4 door is in need of a complete rear hatch door { with unbroken rear window } and unable to locate a 96 for parts in my area
Thanks for any input !!

Go to car-part.com
It's a salvage yard searcher that will find any model year part that will interchange with yours.
Keep in mind there's a lot more to it than just what year it is. They came with or without tire carriers, rear wipers, rear defrost and 3 different shades of glass.

Ok, thanks. Mine does NOT have a spare tire carrier { was originally mounted in the left rear cargo area }, it DOES have the rear window wiper / washer and defroster setup, and I'd guess a medium shade of tint . I'll give the link a try, thanks !!

Did a search, nearest lift gate is $200, and for a 1988 Cherokee. The seller does not know if it will work on my 1996 .
Anybody here have any idea ?

The liftgate itself is the same. OEM part# 55235531.
The wiring may not be the same, they tend to change harnesses every couple years. So you may need to salvage some parts off the old gate.

Thank you sir !
Was the shell composite / fiberglass ? My gate has a bad crack from above the license light all the way down to the latch assembly and has to be slammed hard to latch.

Yea, in those years it was fiberglass. In later model years they switched to sheet metal.

So then a '88 rear gate would also be fiberglass , I'd presume ? Don't think my gate would be easily { if at all } repaired .

Yes, yours would be fiberglass. It's likely that it could be fixed if it's just a single crack. But it would probably cost more than finding a used replacement.

So far, I've gotten one price quote for just the shell of $100., I'm located in western Montana and have not found anything locally. I found this gate online in a salvage yard in Oregon that has the shell, with NO internals , glass, etc. They only want $100 for the gate, but said it would cost me $300 + for freight over to me in western Montana from Oregon . Think I'll take the Jeep to a couple local body shops, and see if its even possible to fix { I have my doubts ! } before going any further . Will post my findings. Thanks Kruzin' for all your input .

Keep your eye on craigslist and facebook market also. People are parting out XJs all the time.

Yep, been doing that as well.
Seeing a lot of Cherokee's being parted out, just not the years where the lift gate will fit my 96, lol !
