Thanks guys appreciate the feedback. I've been working on it after work here and there and it's coming along nicely i think.

Test fit before i weld in the expanded metal for the bottom and paint the thing. Ignore my pass door, i slid into a tree before i had the sliders😂 This poor jeep gets used and abused on the trails. But that's it's purpose i guess

That is a great looking rack! I do like that you have maintained the contour of the roof. Well done.

So this is going to be painful but I'm going to total out what I've spent on this thing so far...

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 Limited 4x4 w/ Quadradrive $800 at the auctions. Cool! Not quite... buyer's premiums, sales tax, and admin fee from the auction yard then emissions and registration after I get it home and I'm at about $1,300. Still not terrible for a runner I guess.

First bulk parts order was $900. New brakes all around with Akebono calipers, front axles, hubs, TREs, valve cover gaskets, rebuild kit for the 247, etc.... Just cleared the $2k mark... Ouch

$1000 shipped on the Rough Country long arm upgrade kit on a Memorial Day sale

$1200 on Clayton springs, track bar, Bilstein shocks, crown insulators, etc etc etc from Kolak

$1115 on Pro Comp 17s with Toyo Open Country Tires from Kolak

$200 in fluids and other various stuff now that's lifted, running, and road worthy

$185 for a custom front drive shaft from a nice old timer in Phoenix

~$1000 on recovery gear including a warn winch, tree strap, snatch block, recovery strap, etc and the metal set to weld my front winch bumper. Haven't even had to pull myself out of anything but that $1000 has saved a few other people so far. Great...\

Battery died... $85 on a battery

$75 on metal to build my rock sliders

$220 on a VLAIR Heavy Duty onboard air kit

$300 on a AGM battery, dual battery isolater , and wiring, fuses, etc

$75 on metal to build my roof rack.... $70 more this morning on a sheet of expanded metal after waiting 2 weeks for a buddy to come through with a spare piece he had at work.... but he flaked.

$125 on a cheap light bar to go on my roof rack and some wire harnesses/switches/relays. And I ended up with 6 LED pods for free I'm putting up there as well. Why not...

$310 for a 5th wheel and tire from Kolak for a spare this week. Price went up, should have bought 5 to begin with

And I'm not going to add them all up but another $500 easily on random things like Sony speakers for the doors, window actuators/motor assemblies, door clips, battery terminals, hatch struts, little missing or broken things here and there.

$8660 total.... this was supposed to be a cheap, fun toy for the weekends. Ah well.

But the end is in sight. (I know, there's never really an end ) From day one I've really wanted a set of Bushwacker fender flairs, that'll be my last big ticket item for this thing sometime this year or next right before I paint it. If I ever run across a Rubi D44 front axle that'll get snatched up but it's such a low priority I wouldn't go out of my way to spend much on it.

Other than that, my big projects are going to be a rear bumper with tire carrier, a tank tuck with armor, a rear storage with drawers that houses some Kicker Solobarrics I have laying around and the onboard air, and a paint job that I'll do. The materials I don't already have will cost a bit but nothing like all of this retail stuff, I'll spend less than $1000 for all of that. Yeah it'll take me a ton of time but I'm looking forward to more custom projects the most.

In the next few years I'm buying a new house with either an RV garage or a detached shop for a full lift. When I have the room I'll be joining my friends with a LS Buggy Build and the WJ will retire as a camping vehicle. ...or I'll get crazy and shove a 5.3 in that too

But finished pictures of the rack coming this weekend! I'm painting it after work one of these days and wiring up the lights. 5 days of MOAB next week so I'm trying to get as much done as possible before then!

$8660 is not expensive for a capable trail rig with all the fixings you have. I have double that in my YJ and that doesn't include the purchase price since I bought it 20 years ago.

OffRoadDevilD, digging it! Appreciate you documenting it for us! It helps a lot to see different options done on our rides.

I'm sad to admit that I've completely neglected my WJ for about 9 months now. I've promoted at work, started a side business, had a baby... you know, all the busy stuff life throws at us. So this month I've decided to get back into the Jeep with some custom projects that might set my WJ aside from the others.
First, the plastic battery tray sucks. And mine was busted. So I drew one up in Fustion 360 and cut it out of 1/8" steel. I like the way it came back. And that thing will never shift on me again lol

Next I started a job that turned out to be significantly more work than I expected... but it'll be awesome when it's done. I pulled the tow bar, fuel tank skid, and tank. Cut the spare tire well out for the tank tuck, and started working on a rear bumper design in CAD. I have the floor designed and ready to cut and I cut and bent the 1/4 mounting brackets for my bumper. This is all CNC plasma cut and I added a 20 ton air over hydraulic brake press to my garage this year. The brackets are going to have some heavy reinforcement added so they'll be a usable recovery points as well as a base for the bumper I'm sorry about the pictures, some still rotate 90 degrees. But I'd rather upload them here than trust a 3rd party to keep the pictures availible. (Thanks photobucket for ruining car forumns everywhere )
