From Rubicon to "ROB"icon

Let's see...Where to begin??

History...Thanks to my older brother I got into Jeeps. He got himself a 88 FSJ wagoneer. And after a wheeling trip to SilverLake sand dunes I had to get me one too.

My 89

With his help we built it up with a 4" lift, trutracks f/r with a regear, 33"s and we even made a new skid for the gas tank.

Also converted the A/C to OBA

His next to mine at SilverLake

Then I wanted a new project so I sold my Jeep to my brother to save for my next one.
How it looked when I sold it to him and also a video I made saying goodbye to it.

A great BIG thanks to my older brother for helping me build the waggie up and also for helping with my rubicon.

Now I've wanted a Rubicon for a while and finally decided it was time. So I saved every penny I could for a whole year. In order to save I ate a J.E.E.P diet. Just Eat Essential Produce. Also while I was saving for my future jeep my daughter drew me a picture of a Jeep Rubicon and nicknamed it the "ROBicon".

I saved up $15,000 to pay cash for one but the one I found was a little more so I had to take a small loan to pay the rest. Payed $18,500 with 38,000 miles on it. I think it was a fare price. But it was missing a few things. I think it was a repo at some point. It was Missing the fog lights, tow hooks, center console, and all five of the original rims and tires. Think they sold somethings before the repo man came and got it. It also has the duel top option and the hard top is long gone.

Anyway here it is....The "ROBicon"

Next to my old one.(now my brothers)

What I've done so far...
I got some Bfg allterrains and soft 8's.
Had to replace the tow hooks and fog lights. I also cut down the stock bumper.

Now for the really big order I put into Savvy Offroad.
Currie 4" lift with front housing kit. Rancho 9000 shocks. Currie HD steering. Vanco 15" big brake kit. Savvy GTS. Savvy bodylift, motor mount lift and a few other things.

A BIG thanks to Gerald at Savvy Offroad for hooking me up on some great prices.

My son and I put in some 1" seat risers under the seats. Got them from summit racing for $.99 each. They are 1" mini bodylift risers.

Amazing how much an inch will make when seeing out the window. I'm 6'3" and it still helped me get a better view of the road.

Painted my head light bezels and installed some Hella vision plus headlights. They are a conversion headlamp. From sealed beam to a replaceable bulb.

And now I'm getting started on all the parts in the corner of my brothers garage.
Again with my brother and my son's help we got the bodylift on.

More to come as we progress.....

Thanks. Yeah I've done a years worth of research to figure out what way I wanted to go with my jeep.

I got next week off so I'm getting ready to do the Savvy GTS and Lod signature series bumper at the same time. I think it will be easier to put the bumper on with the gas tank out of the way. I'll take more picturs as I go.

Well what should have been a simple, easy, no problems at all job turned in to a nightmare.

The motor mount lift.

Never ever thought it would take countless hours to install such a simple aluminum spacer. But it did. Passenger side went in with out issue. Drivers side was not lining up. I think the motor shifted so the last bolt would not thread in to the nut thats welded in the frame. What a pain. Everytime I started to thread the bolt in it would start to cross thread. Move the motor around and try again and the samething. So we took the spacer back out and found that the bolt was trying to cut threads into the aluminum. And that the nut on the frame had a few bad threads in it. So we ran a tap down into it and then the tap broke off into the frame. We were able to ues a 3/8 extension upside down and a wrench on the square end to back the tap out. And in order to get the spacer in we had to drill out the hole in it to give it enough play so the bolt would quit trying to cut threads in it.

After all that when it went back in the stud extension thats provided broke off indside the spacer. Ugh. Had to take it out AGAIN!!! Thanks to my brother he spun up a new stud on his lathe with the correct threads to bolt it all back in.

SOOOO glad thats done. And now I wait for Savvy to come out with the 6 speed Rubicon Under armor.(hint hint)

Ok so after that was done I needed to get the jeep on jack stands, cuz my brother needed my 31" tires to mount on his new rims for his waggie that was in storage.

So I went ahead and got my new tires mounted.

I got four inside my XJ and the fifth one on the roof.

Now onto the Savvy GTS. This is one sweet skid.
I scuffed it with red scotch brite and shot it with clear coat.

Then dropped the gas tank. Was easy to do thanks to the savvy insructions. To bad it was raining.

Then came the LoD bumper tire carrier. Needed to drill a few extra holes in rear cross member. So instead of making a template we bent a paint marker and marked the holes with the bumper mocked up. Had to reach up thru the bumper to mark the holes.

Before:

And after Savvy GTS, LoD bumper and spare:

Yeah I went back and forth about that. I couldn't make up my mind. I wanted to paint then I wanted to clear then paint. Ugh. I think it turned out nice and I'm thinking whenever I do the aluminum body/rocker armor I'll do clear on them too.
