Jeep Swap

I’m doing a 1974 cj5 rebuild. I will be buying a 2004 Jeep Wrangler, and use parts from it. I’m just curious how much I can actually swap over. I’m planning on using the engine, and transmission. Can I use the axels, and drivetrain as well? Basically keep the frame and shell of the cj, and put All the guts and undercarriage of the 04 on the cj. Thoughts?

The axles will need new bracketry to fit under the CJ frame if you're keeping the leaf springs, or you'll need to weld 4 link and coil spring mounts on the CJ frame. Not sure about the motor and trand but it shouldn't be too difficult to adapt them to the CJ.

If you plan to use the engine, trans and t case you will need to swap axles also, jk id drivers drop, cj is pass drop. I would drop the cj tub on the jk frame/drivetrain. CSP in the cj forum is working on dropping a 6 tub onto a jku frame. Should be able to compare notes.

The jeep I’m looking at purchasing is a 2004 Jeep Wrangler x. Those come stock with a Dana 30, and Dana 35. I’m not looking to make this a rock crawler. This is a gift for my fiancé. We will do some minor off roading. Maybe go to a rock garden here and there. It will mostly be a daily driver.

I’ve been reading a lot of where people have put a cj tub on a tj frame. They had to do some fab work to get the mounts lined up. Anyone done this? Or have pics?

At first I thought this was going to be a thread about everybody putting their Jeep keys in a bowl....

The wheelbase is longer on the TJ, so you wont be able to just put the CJ tub on the TJ frame.
that also means an auto trans will be a tight fit, if the TJ is std. trans I'd use that trans,
get a transfer case with the proper drop and use the CJ axles, as the TJ's are wide track.

Plan B; Shorten the TJ frame and rear driveline, have the coil spring suspension, drop on the CJ tub.
there are threads with people doing CJ7 or YJ on a TJ frame with good info.

Whats over that next ridge?

Where can I find the proper transfer case? Any suggestions?

You would need a Pass. side drop transfer case, and an adapter for the trans you plan to use,
and most likely a pair of drive shafts.

Start here for info.

A 4.0 with the NV3550 trans and a model 20 or 300 transfer case would make
a nice drivetrain for the jeep you are wanting.

Be sure to double check both axles you use are still the same ratio.

someone along the way may have swapped an axle and not bothered with gearing,
maybe when stripping the jeep.

I'm relative new to Jeep, yes I am building one but I don't know much !

What about sectioning the CJ5 body, rebuilding it to fit the TJ Chassis ?

Is the TJ like a CJ7 size ?

People put wider full size axles under truck all the time, except this time you would be changing the body... a lot !

Do it right the first time !

That's not really what the OP is looking to build. read post #4 again.
People cut up jeep bodies all the time, but in this case why?, start with a CJ7 and no cutting
but, that's not what he has or is looking for..

That's a decent looking tub and I like the stance, and with the parts he is proposing,
I wouldn't use the weaker TJ D35 axle and unit bearing D30, then have to redo all the suspension mounts.

Not everyone is looking to build an over the top Jeep, I've built lots of vehicles over the years,
and it is possible to overbuild for the intended end product/use and ends up being a flop needing
some serious revision.

The build I proposed in post 12 would be fairly simple. And a modern engine and trans can
transform a vintage vehicle.

just my $.02, but what do I know....

Nick,

Since nobody has asked the question, what tools and know how do you have for this project?

Not to down you, but it helps with advice on the build.

Looks like the CJ is pretty well stripped, do you have any of the parts?
Do you know what engine was in the CJ?
