Guess I'll build an 01 WJ

We just got back from a trip to SW Colorado... Namely the Ouray/Silverton area with all the trails that are in the area. We went in my lifted and quite capable 03 F-250.

While we were there, we rented a couple basically stock JKs... While they wouldn't crawl as well as my full size diesel, it made me wish a had a smaller vehicle to wheel.. Well we have a WJ sitting in the driveway. It needs a little work, including rust repaired and some tires..

So, I've come home and decided to start the build... Here are my goals.

IRO 6.5" "long arm" kit
16x8 wheels
285/70/16 tires (I have a set)
Al's liner on the Exterior after some rudimentary body work
Eventually an LS swap...Either a 5.3 or hopefully a 6.0

What can you do when you don't have any parts or materials, but you have a garage and tools?? You put it on jackstands and start sanding...

Heretic122 and tybarious like this.

Long overdue update.

Figured I'd update this build thread.

After sanding came the typical WJ body work..

Even some "speed holes" in the hood

After the body work came the Al's Liner coating

New cheapo headlights from Amazon and some grill mods. Waiting on the IRO kit...

Next came some brand new JK steelies i got for $60 for all 5. Trying to decide on paint color for the wheels..

Then I scored this parts WJ for $150. No title, so its purely parts and the engine was seized but having a spare trans, transfer case, axles, glass, doors, hatch, lights, etc for $150 was awesome. Just have to deal with the wife complaining about a yard ornament.

Lift kit is finally here!!! IRO Rock link 6.5" long arm kit. Can't wait to move tis thing so I can clean my floor up.

First trip to SMORR to work out the kinks. The flex on this kit is awesome. Thanks IRO, Thanks Kolak.

Next up will be a front bumper/winch mount.

Picked up another project.... Missing on a cylinder. Looks like a recent re-ring went wrong. Lots of ring pieces in the oil pan and a "textured" aluminum head from the piston beating it up with chunks of ring. Rebuild went good tho.

Mocking up a winch mount with scrap i had laying around... Don't judge my garage cleanliness...

Mounted winch and finished the open end of the square tubing with some D-rings. Don't judge my HF winch or my ricer intake..

Next project is a spare carrier with more scrap materials.

Needed to be able to open the hatch obviously. But wanted to retain as much departure angle as possible so everything is pretty tight.

Somewhat finished product. Mounted my high lift as well. You can also see my scrap material roof rack too. I'll upload some more pics of it later.

Mounted some Amazon flush mount LEDs into the bumper. Tied them in to the reverse lights in the trailer plug. Note to self, it is the third wire from the left on the top row in the connector. Purple I believe...

I like having a roof rack, but because the trails around me are often very tight and heavily wooded, I wanted to keep it low profile. A little bit of conduit bending and this is what I came up with. I had a few cheapo LED lights laying around so I added a couple lights to each side, switched independently of course.

Heated seats haven't worked in a long time, so i ditched the ash tray and switches to find a place to mount my CB. I made a switch panel for the light bar, the roof rack lights and the chargers for the dash mounted tablet and phones

As is the case with all WJs, my radiator support got bent pretty bad. I'ts actually quite a bit worse than it looks in this picture. I beat it with a sledge to straighten it as well as i could. Then i found a scrap of angle iron and welded it on the bottom. It's not as heavy as i'd like but should work until I can re-engineer the entire thing.
