Doodles' 06 TJ Build Thread

Finally getting around to making a build thread better late than never! Im naming this thread after my dog, Doodles, because hes probably the only person who loves my Jeep more than I do.

A bit of background: my father purchased this 06TJ in 07 completely stock with 9k miles on it. Apparently the previous owner bought it and hated it. I started driving it in 09 when I was 16. I learned to drive on this Jeep and it has been my only car & daily driver since. My hope is to finally get a second car at the end of this year so I no longer have to street the Jeep so often.

Ive also decided to make Youtube videos along with any mods/maintenance that I do and Ill be linking them in here as well.

Here are some pictures, past & present:

CB Radio Install

The CB Radio install was my latest mod, I got one because I recently joined a Jeep club, Baystate Jeepers.

It's a Uniden Pro 520XL w/ a 5/8 wavelength 2' Firestik antenna.

I filmed the install and made another video explaining a lot of the how & why behind CB radio operation - here are the links to my videos:

Let me know what you think!

I've been thinking about regearing for a while now and have done plenty of research into the field...

So I made this video that sums it all up and gives examples to give a better idea of how regearing and changes in tire size affect your jeep

Really like how you're making videos to go along with everything. If you can teach it you understand it just that much more. Also welcome to the 8" sub in the center console club I'll be following this build

Gauges, Dash Camera, and Navigation

I got inspired after seeing a friend's dash set-up and decided to do something for myself.

Originally I was just seeking extra gauges (throttle position, g-forces, inclinometer, engine coolant temperature, etc.) but after a lot of researched I realized you can do a lot more relatively cheaply!

Spent $140 altogether and got the gauges, navigation, and a dash camera all on one tablet I bought from eBay.

Check out the install video:

Class VI (Stock) Trails in New Hampshire

Went wheeling the other weekend in New Hampshire with my Jeep club. Chose to go on only the stock trails but even those seemed pretty rough to me. As long it's my daily driver I don't think I'll go much beyond stock rated trails .
That should change by the end of this year though!

Shocks

About a year and a half ago I bought my Rough Country 2.5" lift kit. Being the novice that I was, I didn't notice/understand the lack of bump stop extensions included in the kit.

Oh well! After bottoming out my shocks Rough Country sent me new ones for free! I'll be putting in bump stop extensions next week.

Here's a video I made as I replaced them:

Faded Fender Flares

Did some aesthetic work to the Jeep today...

Some MeGuiar's Black Ice on the fender flares worked magically!

Body Rust Filling and Painting

I have a bad spot in the steel right below my passenger door that's been there for a long time.

This is my first time doing any sort of body work - here's the process I took:

Sand w/ 80 grit. Clean surface.
Bondo
Sand w/ 80, 180, then 320 grit. Clean Surface.
Primer. Sand w/ 320
Paint

It came out okay, I definitely think I could do a better job next time around.

Moving across the country and Jeep won't start

As I'm headed home from my last day of work before moving 3100 miles to the opposite coast, my Jeep won't start. Won't even turn over.

I figured it had to be the starter. Checked all the terminals and they were good, figured it maybe corroded on the inside from being submerged while off-roading. Brushes probably weren't making contact with the armature.

Before I even tried to replace I gave it a whack with a hammer and bam! Started right up! But I replaced it anyway in anticipation of my road trip.

Replacing Inner Shift Boot

I discovered a while back that my inner shift boot was all torn up and letting debris and road noise into the interior.

Bought a replacement a while back but took a while to put it in because I needed to dremel out most of the bolts. Putting in new bolts was also a real PITA

Glad I did it though!

Oil Pump Drive Assembly

On the last day of my coast-to-coast road trip the Jeep started squealing realllllly badly. Unfortunately due to time constraints I had to drive nearly another 400 miles before getting around to diagnosing and fixing the problem.

Turns out it was the Oil Pump Drive Assembly (OPDA) / Camshaft Synchronizer which is known to fail on 04-06 TJs.

This ended up being possibly the most painstaking work I've done on this Jeep. Partially because of the inconvenient timing but mostly because of the $%^!-ing retaining bolt. That was next to impossible to get out. Had to chisel a slot in it then use a pneumatic screwdriver. The best alternative I could recommend is a 6 point 1/2" deep offset box end wrench.
