1976 CJ7 Build

I just recently bought a 1976 CJ7. I have about 10k to play with and I've picked out a new sound system and some interior upgrades but I'm looking to add a bit more engine power and get some new suspension. I'm definitely a newbie but am looking to learn. Any suggestions on what I should add to improve the experience and beef up the engine a bit would be greatly appreciated. I would like to potentially get into rock crawling but for now, it will just be used to drive around town.
Also, these are dealer photos I haven't gotten around to taking my own yet.

The engine is an AMC 304 5L V8 with about 76k miles and it has an automatic trans that was added with 76k miles as well.

If you are starting with something in fairly good condition, $10k is not a bad budget to work with.

Are you interested in farming out everything (in which case the $10k will disappear quickly), or are you interested in really diving in to doing the work yourself? It's an adventure, but WELL worth the effort.

To start out, maybe take a look at the "96XJ Forest Cruiser build". It's an XJ, not a CJ, but is a good example of a reasonable common-sense approach to improving a rig that mostly gets driven on the street.

For a full CJ build, take a look at Stumpfarming's build thread. His is fully rebuilt and back on the road/trail, but continues to develop (and work out some issues). Worth reading.

For something kind of extreme, but super interesting, check out Tanner's 79 CJ build.

I couple of these haven't been updated super recently, so you might have to scroll through the build pages a bit to find them.

Looking forward to seeing where you take this.
