It looks you are attacking the right area. The small slot contains the locking tab but it's usually recessed somewhat deeply in the plastic. You just have to get the tool deep enough and probably have to play with it to depress the locking tab far enough to release.

Why are you trying to remove it? Why not just cut the wire that is attached to it? To remove it the right way you need a depinning tool although a small set of picks can sometimes get the job done.
