Maybe I can sweet talk the xyl into getting me a mobile for the jeep for xmas this year. We do have some 44 repeaters here, but from listening to them, not alot of traffic on them. Though a ft 7900 would be nice, or even a yaesu 350, I would be tickled if I got a 2900M gift wrapped.

Was farting around on google the other night, and came across some ham posts on the FJ site. It was in their colorado forum section, but thought it was interesting.

KT4MR here. I stopped at advanced. One of these days I might go ahead and get my extra. I don't operate as much as I used to but I just retired and might just fire some old equipment up.

Hey welcome aboard. Going to pickup a yaesu 2900 tommorow for the KJ, kind of a gift to me and the wife, of course! Just have to get her past her phobia of talking on the radio.

Keith, N1XTK General class here.I keep thinking about going for the Extra class but every time I tried, something would come up. Don't do that much with it anymore but still check it out once in a while. Especially when camping.

gmgreen, don't knock the advanced call. Everyone that has an advanced call had to do the code to get it. No code free advances. 73s Mike KG7VL.

ae5dw - If you don't mind my asking, what mount did you use for your 7k head unit on the dash?

I'm installing a 7k now on my 03 TJ and wrestling with where/how to mount the head unit.

I'm using a Little Tarheel II for HF and an SSB-15 for VHF/UHF. I've installed the VHF/UHF on the roof sitting on top of a Garman rack with an aluminum sheet metal subfloor. The Tarheel I'll probably mount on one of the Garmin rack legs.

Thanks..

Just for grins, I'd love to have an HF rig in my TJ but wow HF mobile antennas are huge. I see them on big trucks and just can't imagine running that big of an antenna on my TJ.
w6pea likes this.

When you have a choice, buy American made.

It's the Icom mount screwed and 3M trim taped to a Daystar tray.

Yeah Mike, I had to know code for general and advanced. I just practiced with the key and a lot of memorization. When I took the tests I would just write down letters I recognized and then put the words together from there. I was never interested in code anyway. I still have a complete shack. Yaesu FT-990, FT-890AT, Ameritron AL80B amp. 2m/440 set up also. My Cushcraft R7 was destroyed a few years ago during a ice storm we had here in Lexington. Got to get up another HF antenna soon. Just picked up a XV-7R HT because I was having a hard time finding batteries for my old HT's. 73's.

I have a Yaesu FT60R HT that I carry with me. When I have the funds, and wifes approval, I'd like to get the YAESU FT-8900R for my WJ since it has quad band functionality.
