KI4YXO here.. I use a FT-450D with a G5RV
at the house, along with a 2 meter FT-1802.

Here's my portable setup down at the OBX.
FT-77, with a Eagle One antenna (W8AFX)
and a LDG Z-100Plus all running on battery
power.

Yaesu FT-7800 in the Jeep.

Actually depending on the repeaters setup you could have a conversation with someone clear across the globe with a 5w handheld and your local repeater using IRLP.
Had a nice QSO with a guy in Australia with my local repeater here in Alberta Canada.

Just empty every pocket

If your make own antennas and build things yourself it doesn't have to be that expensive but nobody does that anymore. I have made lots of antennas and such but I have spent some money on radios over the years.

i make all my HF antennas and have made several VHF/UHF antennas. the ones i didnt build, the mobile antenna on my truck, my GP-9 that i got a hellofa deal on(antenna and 60ft of LMR400 ultraflex for $35), and a simple 2m antenna i bought from radio shack because i needed an antenna for in the house use with my ht and i had a $20 gift card. antennas are way to easy to build to not do it yourself. but there are times a bought antenna is just something thats needed.

I learned this the hard way by throwing
out my call in every state while traveling
North. Local repeaters, nobody comes back
to you. (unless you are in NC ) National
simplex, you get way more contacts while
on the road.

There's a repeater in New Bern, 442.075
and Jacksonville, 444.675.

http://www.carolina440.net/

If you're in Jacksonville, you might be able
to hit the Wilmington 2 meter repeater, which
is 146.820 (-) PL 88.5
