Anyone have ideas to keep the coolant and oil temperatures under control? Towing this weekend I'm seeing coolant at 215 to 225. Oil between 220 and 230

Coolant temperature is being digitally read from the automatic climate control display.
Oil temperature is being measured from a sensor between the engine and oil filter.

Transmission has been staying between 160 and 180 pan temperature.

I watched a video on how to modify the hydraulic fan solenoid to get the fan to spin faster. I might pick up a spare solenoid and try that.

With a factory 195 thermostat and a brand new Mopar water pump and a newer Mopar radiator there's no reason temperatures should be this high.

What speed were you moving at when temps increased? What radiator you using also? Fan upgrade may not help if you were at highway speed. Really shouldn’t need a fan there much at all anyway.

I was towing between 65-80 mph depending on traffic.

Mopar radiator and water pump.

That’s fast enough where a fan really shouldn’t be required for air velocity through the radiator. I don’t think it’s your fan.

I wish there was a quality high flow water pump and quality aluminum radiator for the WJ.

Unless this isn't "normal"

I installed a cheap all aluminum one from China about two years ago. It’s been flawless and is a bit larger than the stock size. It fit with only a few small modifications. I posted on it here of course.

Another thing you can do to help is block the airflow around your radiator - make sure all frontal air is coming thru the fins and not around the tank.

Here’s the thread if you’ve not read it.

https://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f310...rs-ok-4240074/

Have you verified your thermostat opens ALL the way? I once had one fail on me and it cost me an engine. Now I ALWAYS check a stat in slowly heating up water on the stove before I install it. Make sure it opens up at the right temp fully. Also maybe get a high flow thermostat. I have one on my Mustang. I can find the brand if needed.

Thanks for linking those post. A lot of good info there.

Hesitant to replace already if it's not leaking. This Mopar unit is fairly new. But check in the thermostat maybe a good option as well.

On another note. This weird rough idol seems to be getting worse. Maybe need to pull a spark plug

This is the type of high flow thermostat I used on my Mustang when temps became an issue. It flows much more which you can see when you test it in the slow boil stove top. Be sure to use a thermometer so you know the temp each opens at. Run your current and the new replacement in the same pot at the same time.

That’s likely not for the Jeep but it was a picture of the style so I grabbed the link.

The boat uses those style thermostats in the motors. The work well, they keep the motors at 170 under load. 160 degree thermostat.

As far as that thread, I just read through it. I would be really upset if my new Mopar Radiator was bad. ~2 years old, with a new water pump, mopar, couple months, and G-05 coolant.

I was getting about 55k miles on a stock radiator before the seal on the plastic tank would fail. I’d say your thermostat function might be the best first place to check.
