Transmission\TC Issue?
I have a 97 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) 4.0L with 242K miles on it and it has a noise that I canít pinpoint. Before throwing time or money away, I thought Iíd check the forum for insight or advice. All thoughts welcome.

TC: NP231J
Transmission: AW4

The sound seems to come from the front of the trans hump or back of the engine compartment.
In Park at 2K rpm no noise and engine sounds good
Put in Neutral while moving no change in sound
No shifting issues when driving on the road
Putting in 4WD no issues
The noise is not present when moving and becomes really noticeable at 30 mph and above
Sounds like gearing rattle or rough bearing to me. Could be a dragging (like a stretched TC chain rubbing the housing) sound but tough to tell.
With the jeep on stands and indicating 40 mph (wife at the wheel), I was not able to pinpoint the noise (engine, trans, TC) using a section of garden hose. Nope Ė didnít get under it. I was already spooked enough. However, the noise could be clearly heard when sitting in the Jeep
Just did the brakes and no wobble in the wheels
No extra noise going around turns so probably not a wheel bearing
Front ujoints are fairly new
Fluids are good

Quite a good chance its differential bearings. The noise increases with speed. Any glitter or glint when you changed the diff fluid? Possibly louder on deceleration.
Loose chain is also another possibility too. Are you capable of rebuilding one? The parts are not to expensive, more a lot of labor.
Unless its grinding or clunking most likely just age noise.
Its hard not to get paranoid at some sounds but there are many out the with way over 300K on the clock. I would be very surprised if they were quiet.
Thin floor insulation does not help either.
