Buying a Used Transfer Case

I'm lookin to buy an old NP 242 transfer case and *possibly* a used manual 5 speed nv3550. This will be used to convert my jeep into a 4x4.

When looking for a used transfercase/tranny, what should I be looking for or test to see if that part is not defective? Last thing I need is losing a couple hundred bucks on buying a defective part. What can I do minus slapping the part in a working jeep and running it around the block?

Thanks

Either running it or opening it up seem like only ways to be certain.

I wouldn't worry too much. The 90's XJ ones are so cheap you can take your chances. Buy a 2nd one if you get a dud. Make sure the spline matches your 5spd... should be 23.

If you want one of the heavier-duty (and longer) WJ or Durango units, they're a bit less common. I'd probably get one of those from a wrecker with a warranty.
