Alternator charging intermittently

I have a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel Engine with 300000kms.
Recently I had the alternator replaced by a mechanic. He placed a new alternator and we also installed a new battery.
After a few days of driving with no problems, the battery light came on. I sent the car to the mechanic but while the car was with him, he was not able to find any problems with the alternator and the installation. He also checked for malfunction codes and nothing came up.
I purchased a voltmeter and it went from 14.7 to 11.2
I got the car back and for a few days it was driving fine until the battery light came on again.
I parked the car and didn't move it for several days. In the mean time, I charged the battery with a portable battery charger.
A few days latter, I started the car and to my surprise, the battery light was gone and again the voltmeter was up to 14.7
I drove the car for one day and at the end of that day, the battery light was back on and the voltmeter was again showing 11.3.
I'm not sure what to do. The mechanic thinks that it might be a software problem between Chrysler and Mercedes. He checked for all the connections and fuses and everything seems to be fine.

I fear taking the car to the dealer as I have a feeling that they will charge me an arm and a leg.
Any suggestions?

Check the voltage reading directly at the battery posts when the gauge is reading low, you may have an indication problem. You should also check the battery cables with an ohmmeter to see if they are internally damaged.
