94 YJ with 4.0L - trying to ID year (motor/pcm)

I bought a nice 94 YJ with a swapped 4.0L engine and auto trans.

It’s missing the catalytic Converter and rear O2 sensor.

The sensor wiring is there.

I think it’s a 97 or 98 harness (previous owner thought so but did not build it) and going by the downward angle of the trx case I think it came out of a Cherokee.

The OBDII connection does show codes for the missing O2 Sensor... But the VIN function isn’t supported to ID the Vehicle the PCM came out of on my cheapie scanner.

According to Rock Auto there is a difference between 97 and 98 rear O2 sensors (comparing Cherokees and NTK sensors) But the Walker catalytic converter is the same.

Do I just order the Walker cat and a 98 downstream O2 sensor (guess and check method)? Or do I see if I can get some numbers off the PCM and try to decode it????

Other than the rich smell (assume open loop because of missing rear O2) And bad coolant temp sensor (got a code for it too) it runs pretty good.

Have you tried looking at the build date code on the block?

Yeah I found this on the Drivers side of block:
1996-98......53020569 <- I could see 20569 on block To the front right of the motor mount.
So with OBDII Im think 97-98..... but Ill look for that # on the passenger side?

Right side of the block, forward of the distributor, below and between #2 and #3 spark plugs like the picture shows. There's a good chance you'll have to clean the machined pad with the date code in order to read it.
