88 YJ runs for 10 seconds then dies

Hey I have an 88 YJ 6 cylinder mechanical carb with an HEI distributor. When I turn it on it runs for about 10 seconds and then shuts off suddenly. I put an inline fuel pressure gauge and the pressure only drops once the engine is off. The carb squirts fuel when I open the throttle right after it shuts off so I don't think that it is a fuel issue. I also hooked up my distributor straight to the battery and nothing changed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you successfully immediately restart the Jeep every time after it dies? Does it still die after ten seconds if you hold or work the throttle to keep the engine above 2000rpm?

I’ll throw a few ideas at you... Have you considered vacuum leak? I’ve been working on brakes lately and learned that the booster could stall the engine if it’s worn out (may only happen if you’re holding down the pedal).

Have you pulled the plugs if you’re looking into the ignition side of things. Maybe you got the firing order wrong. If you pulled the distributor, could it be 180* out

Also what’s the back-story on this engine. Was it sitting for a while? Did you just put it back together? Or did this just start happening one day?

What’s the condition of the ignition system components?
Fouled or broken spark plugs?
Old/damaged plug wires?
Corrosion under the distributor cap?
Cracked distributor cap?

One more question... Does it run smooth or lumpy for those 10 sec?

Wow so I just tried to put an old carb on and the engine ran fine. Lesson learned never buy cheap ebay parts.

All buzzwords to maximize search results. Poor grammar, ergo 'caveat emptor'.
