2HI will not work and get horrible grinding from rear when clutch is let out in any g

I have a 2004 rubicon and I was Driving home a few days ago from work and pulled to a stop sign and as soon as I put it back into 1st gear I got a horrible grinding and the jeeo wouldent move. I tried every gear including reverse. I put the jeep into 4Hi and it ran and drove perfectly fine just like normal. I have checked my transfer case linkage and it seems fine. I dropped the rear driveshaft and was able to put it in all gears in 2Hi without the grinding but if I drove it in 4Hi the grinding would start again. I also spun the rear differnetial by hand when the driveshaft was out and was able to hear a grind comming from the inside. Did my rear differential go out or could it be my transfer case? Its my only vehicle so I need help fast

Sounds like it's time to remove the rear differential cover and inspect the internals for the source of the noise.
