2016 Jeep Cherokee Stalls While Driving

I purchased my 2016 Jeep Cherokee new in December and have driven it for nearly 4 months with no issues (car only has 2k miles). Last week it stalled on my while driving a total of 4 times. The engine completely died, the battery light illuminated and the screen displayed a message that read "Place in P, then select gear." I attempted to place in park and then back into drive but the car had no power went nowhere. I also lost power steering and the ability to brake when this happened - super scary! I was out running errands and as this continued to happen (I had to turn off and restart the car each time), I drove it directly to the dealer. They have now had it for a week, have provided horrendous service the entire time (besides the point) and have not been able to replicate the issue. I am going back tomorrow to get back a car that I no longer feel safe driving. I've read on several websites that numerous people have experienced the exact same issue with 2014/2015 models. Has anyone had this issue and been able to find resolution? I just opened a case with Jeep Wave/Chrysler this evening and in hopes that will help escalate it.

Hi!
I just had the same thing happen with the exception of the message. It happened once before, however I had just thought I had been negligent in actually starting my car and that I just put it into reverse and rolled backwards. However, now I think this is what happened then, too! Did you ever find out what the actual issue was? I'm very concerned. I leased mine in April of 2016, it has less than 12,000 miles on it.

My 2016 Cherokee dies while I'm driving (city & highway ["dinged" but didn't die-I won't drive it on the highway anymore]). It is frightening and potentially deadly. There is no pattern to when or why this happens. It happens repeatedly (7x now) and the dealership cannot identify nor correct the problem. The computer doesn't register any codes and doesn't recognize that the vehicle has died. Nothing shows on the dashboard either when this happens. There is a "ding" and the car dies. I have been reading (online) many other identical accounts of this problem with others who own the 2015 & 2016 Cherokee models. My car is, yet again, at the dealership. This is a POTENTIALLY DEADLY SITUATION! I am afraid to drive this vehicle! I have filed complaints with safercar.gov, NHTSA-888-327-4236, FCA Customer Care-800-853-1403. The more complaints filed, the greater the probability of investigation. I encourage all experiencing this dangerous problem to file complaints.

I have had the same issue a few times. The dealership tried to say i need an oil change but this happens every 3-4 months it is rather scary and if something happens to me I will be suing Jeep, because i have called the customer care and the dealership many times about this incident.

2016 Cherokee Stalls in Traffic

Iíve been having the same issue, momentary warning chimes and no message displayed, and the vehicle just shutting off while in traffic. Iím afraid I may get rear ended someday. This just started happening about 3 days ago and it has happened each day. Now Iím afraid when someone drives behind me fearing they will hit me once it suddenly shuts off. I contacted Jeep about this today and they said they havenít heard of this issue. But when I searched online, numerous Jeep owners are having this issue. I filed a report with the DOT NHTSA so `that this is documented in the event I get killed or injured in a accident.

I am so thankful I was in a parking lot instead of on the freeway.

I have a 2016 Jeep Cherokee with about 30,800 miles. Thursday, after work, I drove the car about 10 miles on the freeway. I exited the freeway and pulled into a parking lot. All of the sudden the car made a 'ding' sound, the engine died, steering locked up, the battery light flashed and a notification popped up that said to put the transmission in park and select the desired gear. Luckily, after the car came to a rolling stop, I was able to put the car in park, turn it off and restart it.

I called to make an appointment and the soonest appointment they have is 4 days from now. The best part, the service adviser told me it would be nearly impossible to duplicate the problem. I started searching online and haven't found very much information.... A little about push button, but mine is with key. A lot of information related to low oil because the engine is designed to shut off when oil is low but I just checked mine and it is about half way up the safe zone. I also read someone mention that on her car the 'pistons were scored and oil was burning off' and that they need to replace the engine / vehicle buy back. This appears to be an oil problem, so I am just not sure what is wrong with my car.

Bottom line, after experiencing it and then reading SO MANY other peoples issues, I am completely afraid to drive this car and had to take an Uber to and from work yesterday ($55 round trip) I haven't even made it to the appt yet and was not offered a loaner car or any options. We are supposed to go to Oregon up the coast for Thanksgiving and I am really worried the dealership is not going to figure it out in time. I pay nearly $500.00 a month for a car that I thought would be safe because it is new and now I feel like it is a death trap.

Jeep, there are too many complaints regarding this issue. Please issue a recall so we can feel safe in our cars again.

Hi Shelleyk,
We're deeply sorry that you have experienced this. Unfortunately, it's true, the dealer cannot diagnose this concern if it cannot be duplicated. With that said, I would still be happy to provide as much assistance as possible while your Jeep is at the dealer. Just send us a private message.

2016 Jeep Cherokee

I cannot believe how many jeep owners have had the same experience I have been having with my 2016 Jeep Cherokee and that nothing is being done to rectify the problem. My car has stall 3 times in the last 3 days, the last one was while waiting to make a left hand turn at a busy intersection. I called the service department at my Dodge dealership and I'm getting the run around and cannot take me in until 4 days from now. You will think that with such a dangerous problem with the car, they will make it a priority to check it out. Can someone please get back to me with a solution with this problem, I don't feel safe driving my car anymore. I hope someone in this forum will make it a priority to look into a fast solution to this matter. If you cannot help me, please let me who I should contact to deal with these matter.

2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited Shuts Off While Driving
My daughters 2016 also has been shutting off but other than the battery light coming on and a message to be put in park to select a gear no engine codes apear. This morning the dealer said it was due to a safety feature indicating low oil but no low oil light came on or was recorded. The dealer said the engine required 2qts of oil to bring it back up to the appropriate level, to me that means there is something wrong with the engine as it shouldn't be burning so much oil and the low oil light should have come on when it was one quart low. If its burning so much oil I suspect it might not pass state inspection. Is anyone an attorney or know a good attorney ? My question is what is required to file a class action law suit ? Are there a minimum number of defendants required ? Does anyone have any experience setting up a go fund me page to initiate a claim against Jeep for lack of action, maybe that would get them to respond to the issue.

Update on my daughters 2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited

Update on my daughters 2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited which has been shutting off while driving. To start please keep in mind that I can't make stuff like this up. We picked her Jeep up yesterday and service at the dealer said it was two quarts low on oil, which they added and now its supposed to be good to go, Bull S*it ! I asked enough questions to get a better understanding of their story. So, get this, in 2015 Jeep started offering a new higher efficiency engine available in some models, I didn't catch what they call it, it turns out that this high efficiency engine draws more oil out of the sump while its running, because of this the oil level sensor, the same sensor on used in the other engines, does not monitor the actual level of oil in the sump, because its being drawn down to a lower level, so Jeeps with this engine do not warn you when you are low on oil, the computer only monitors the hours the engine has been running to determine how long until your next oil change, I suspect that in their infinite wisdom the engineers decided to just turned off the oil level warning. The fact that the engine shuts off is a safety feature which in this case is due to having no warning that you are two quarts low on oil and in danger of destroying the engine. Just to screw with you a little more it turns out that the design specs for this "special" engine allow for it to burn 1 quart of oil every thousand miles, which for a "normal" engine would be considered a problem requiring further evaluation. If we were talking about Microsoft they would call this a "feature", something that doesn't work quite right and can seriously screw up your day. So either the engineers at Jeep know about this problem and are too incompetent to come up with a solution or they are morons and are totally unaware, I believe they are aware and trying to work on it and develop a solution because the service coordinator I spoke with said the 2018 version of the engine doesn't stop while driving as much, Really ! Please keep in mind that there is no indication that they are trying to solve the "feature" for the Jeeps already on the road. So, there is a post from Jennifer who is a Jeep Social Care Specialist, isn't that special, in response to my previous irritated post, I think it is generated by AI response software because it seams to be the standard response for anyone with a problem, no action just sympathy. As a test I would like to ask Jennifer to go, as a representative all of the loyal Jeep owners they are pissing on, and slap some of the engineers working on fixing this problem so that maybe they will get their act together. On second thought maybe they are incompetent and need some help, so if anyone has any ideas how they could get their thumbs out of their a*ses please share with the group. In all honesty this is a serous safety failure and everyone please file a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/

This has happened to me again; Jeep shuts off and battery light flash and message to put in park. This time I checked oil level and it was low. I don’t understand why these vehicles burn so much oil, especially when you keep up with the maintenance and have oil changed as scheduled. There’s something inherently wrong with the design for that much oil to disappear over a few months.
