2002 wrangler motor dies when put into reverse

I have a 2002 Wrangler with a six cylinder motor and manual 5 speed transmission. The jeep goes forward just fine. The problem is when i try to go in reverse. I depress the clutch, shift into reverse, the engine is running fine. When I release the clutch and as the pedal gets higher and engages the engine. The motor dies. I'm not stalling the motor by poor clutch release.

I've heard this problem can happen with automatic transmissions, but with a manual very unusual. I've tried a replacement computer with no change. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what the problem could be.

Thanks Paul

Simple thought, but maybe it's a ground or electrical issue tied to your back up light.

Does it load the motor and stall or does it just shut off when you release the clutch? Will it roll free backwards when in neutral? Will it roll free backwards in reverse with the clutch pushed in? Something could be binding up and causing the engine to stall. If you put the transfercase in neutral and then put the trans in reverse and let off of the clutch pedal does it still stall? Need to find out what is not allowing it to move.

In regards to Fourtrails response. I could get the jeep to move putting the transfer case into low and reversing. The jeep will not roll backwards when in reverse and depressing the clutch. i can push it back ward in neutral with the motor off.. when my brother got the jeep to reverse with the transfer case in low. It makes a lot of noise. I am thinking clutch. I need to try some of the other things you suggested to hopefully figure out what's happening. the jeep does make the sounds when going forward. not as bad. Thank you for your input. Will try to update my results in the future. '

I am thinking Mechanical, it is going into 2 gears at once due to a bent/broke shift fork... to test, will jeep roll(with help from a friend or two) when gearshift is in R and clutch pressed in? If not, drop the tranny....
