1977 CJ5 Carb question

Hey guys, first post so bear with me.

I have a 1977 CJ5 with inline 6C 4.2L engine. The body is in great shape, but i'm having some motor issues. It starts and runs, but backfires very often when I give it some gas. The muffle is "footballed" out so I know i'm replacing that ASAP. I've been told by many people I should just replace the 40 year old Carter single barrel carb thats on it and upgrade to a 4 barrel Holly. In order to do this, I believe I need a new intake manifold. Questions:

What intake would you guys recommend?

Should I get a header? (I've been told yes due to more pressure from 4 barrel carb, but wanted the experts opinion.) If so, which one?

Also, does anyone have experience with a Holly 4 barrel 600 with vacuum secondary?

Any help is appreciated. I really want to get this baby running well for the spring/summer.

Thanks,

Baker
