Center brake light

How many older jeeps have Center brake light? I was told that anything newer than 1985 must have one

Not so. Passenger cars have them from 85 and up. Trucks and SUVs didn't require them till later. Pretty sure Wranglers didn't have them till the TJs in '97 or at least the later YJs. I know for sure CJs never had them, and they were made till '86...

From the NHTSA site:

Quote:
Center High Mounted Stop Lamps (CHMSL) have been standard equipment on all new passenger cars sold in the United States since model year 1986 and all new light trucks since model year 1994, as required by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108.

All TJs absolutely had them so your jeep should have wiring and contacts for them. Pretty easy to wire up a simple round red LED and mount on spare.

Mine has one. It's a safety issue.
