What size tires are you currently running? I have a 5 speed with 4.10s and 35s and I enjoy driving it on and off road. It does good on the freeway with gas as well.

Ah, one of the why don't you just put an LS in it types (or SBC or [insert cheap available V8 here]). There isn't much point in trying to explain it to you, but I will anyway. If your only goal is to make HP cheaply, yes, swapping in a higher HP motor to start with - especially one with a massive aftermarket like an SBC or LS - is the right choice.

However there are plenty of reasons to not just drop in a small block v8. Number one, everyone does that already to everything so whats so special about it?

I like to keep it in the family, I couldn't in good conscious take a Jeep and put a Chevy motor in it. I have a 351 windsor short block hanging out in my garage that would fit great, but same issue, that needs to go in a Ford. (if we are talking about a vehicle I am not passionate about, maybe my opinion would be different).

I also have a love for straight 6's: They run so nice, they are tough, easy peasy to work on, excellent low end, etc.

My goal is not to make the most HP as cheaply as possible, I want to make plenty of power, have a really fun jeep to drive, and have fun in the process. That in addition to the above points is why I have the original straight sixes in the jeeps. Plus both of my I6's are already stroked to 4.6L and make similar HP and more torque than your stock V8 does anyway.

So throw 10psi on top and it should be that much more awesome.

I am looking at it purely from the reliability stand point. A 4.6 with a blower will be less reliable than than a stock 6.0L if you abuse it. My jeep is a daily driveable one ton xj on 40s that is on its 3rd stock 4.0L they have a bad habit of making holes in the cylinder walls no matter what mileage the motor has been. The 60k mile motor exploded quite spectacularly taking out the lower rod bearing and windowing. The og motor from the jeep ate the crank and the current motor is on borrowed time as I am not paying anything for another 4.0L. That is why I ask I have found them to be less than happy with the level of rev limiter that gets applied trying to warm up 40s. My buddies with stock LS family engines just wheel.

You'd enjoy it more with the proper (gear chart) 4.88 gears. I went with 5.13 on my Rubicon with 35s, just because it's possible now.

IMO a 4.0L is no match for 40" tires. Having 5.13 gears and 35s, I can't imagine what you need to run 40s.

I agree with the 40s...

Ive been absent awhile so forgive me for repeat info but what axles are you turning 5.13s in?

Edit: just scrolled up and saw "Rubicon"...so I'm assuming Rubi D44s ?

I would hate driving my jeep with 4.88s that's way too much gearing for me. 4.56 would be okay but I would suffer on road trips
