I'll definitely be back, though no guarantee on when just yet. Moving in June and XJs there are much cheaper than where I'm living now, so I'll probably hold off til then to save some money. We'll see though. I check craigslist multiple times a week for deals, just haven't found anything great yet...

My XJ is parked and won't be touched for another 21 days while I am in KC MO on business...

Money doesn't buy happiness, but it buys a Jeep. And I ain't ever seen a sad person in a Jeep!!

A head-scratcher...

I had everything off my front bumper this evening for a fresh coat of paint (pics later).

While putting everything back together I noticed something kinda strange, so I thought I'd share it with the group.

On the front bumper I have two Campbell 7/8" shackles, WLL (working load limit) 6 1/2 tons.

This seemed a little odd, so I checked the back bumper.

On the back I have two CM 7/8" shackles, WLL 8 1/2 tons.

Both quality, respected US brands.

So, why is there a 4000 pound difference in the rating? They look nearly identical to the naked eye, both the same type of shackle, just rated different.

Not that it really matters, I'll never get close to the load limit on either brand, it just kinda got me wondering...

What did you do to your XJ/MJ today?

Well I made a lot of progress since Friday. Stripped down that block, cleaned an installed the head on the new engine along with the newer motor mounts and accessories, bolted it back up to the trans and got it all fully installed back into the Jeep. Welded up a new exhaust. Jeep is back off jack stands. Just needs a computer, starter, battery, radiator and driveshafts and I can take it for a spin.

Probably a different grade of steel, a different rating methodology or both

So....as normal the forums for my other vehicles are falling through terribly and I trust y'all more than most: What else would you guys replace while replacing cylinder heads? The complete heads will involve gaskets, valves and springs, but should I replace the pushrods and rockers while I'm in there? Something else I'm not thinking of?

Head bolts / studs depending on what engine it is. They should be new since they are typically at or close to yield when torqued properly. I would check that all the push rods are straight, but if so I wouldn’t bother replacing them.

Build thread post 291

Last night I did a "cosmetic".

Before:

And, after:

It's just rattle can, so won't last forever, but it looks better than the rattle can flat black that it covered.

On a completely different topic, here's some shots on something that's been keeping me busy for the last few weeks.

We got my wife's Pug female (I put "*****" in here, the censor deleted it! LOL) bred this summer, these are a few of the results. They say the average Pug litter (especially a first litter) is 3 to 4. Our little girl pumped out 6! We've been kept busy feeding, cleaning, etc ever since. Two are going to family, one is sold and I think I have one more sold at this point. So only two more to find homes for (I gotta get 'em spoken for soon, or the wife is gonna keep one...or two).

Didn't notice the rear windows but did notice the front doors, mirrors, and side markers. Looks like '96 front side markers and mirrors with one piece glass '97 and up doors?

I thought my transmission was going out. Shifting out of park into reverse it would shift really hard. Under easy acceleration it delayed the shift from 1-2 and shifted really hard again. It even banged into third. Finally it never would drop into overdrive at highway speeds.

Turns out to have been two easy to fix issues. First, the fluid level was too high. Drained about a quart to get it to correct level. (Not sure how it came to have so much fluid??)

Second, the Throttle Valve cable was waaaaaay out of adjustment. Got it adjusted properly and took it for a spin. Shifts smooth as butter and runs down the highway like it should.
