I feel bad for you guys. My '00, with CA Emissions, when bought 5 years ago was a kinda running not really driveable project. Of the issues that I have had to sort out misfires or heat soak were not on the list. I replaced the injectors with 4 hole ones because the stock ones had about 150K and figured they just needed to go. And since we were doing it might as well upgrade. I replaced the heat shield there just cause the thing was pretty beat up. I replaced all 4 O2 sensors then too. Again figured they had 150K on them and just needed to go. When I first started coming around I was reading about misfire issues. When I got around to changing the plugs I figured cause I was not having any misfire issues she would get the exact same plug she already had in her. Turned out to be cheapo Champions. And them things were beat. Could not believe she was running as well as she was. All this was done to improve MPG. Did not care what the end result was but figured I did what I could to get the best MPG that she was capable of. I had 5.9 GC louvers put in my. Not cause I was having a problem but because I liked the look. Plus my body guy was dealing with surface rust issues on the hood and roof for me, was able to score a set of louvers, so figured that was the time to get it done.

Warm. About a 140 degrees on my temp gauge.

1 165
2 170
3 150
4 155
5 165
6 165

So was curious about what they would be stone cold.

1 145
2 150
3 140
4 145
5 150
6 155

Thinking I might have some carbon build up too.

Interesting how your numbers changed,,,Might be the rings are sealing better at operating temp.

The FSM that I have is a factory one in PDF,,,Will have to get a paper copy,,,the specs are at the end of the 4.0L engine section (page 9-90). Mine is a 1997 model. I do not know how to load up just a page from a PDF file. I copied the info into Word and attached the file,,,not sure if it worked though,,,

As for the carbon build up,,,it was a memory from my tech school days. Seems to me I remember my instructor saying that if you had one to a few cylinders reading high then it was carbon build up.

I got the head off yesterday and found a 3/8" void in the head gasket between cyl 2 & 3,,,as suspected. Did not notice any excessive carbon build up in any of the cylinders. I measured the bores and I was surprised to find that they were stock size with the most worn cylinder .002" larger than the high side of the specs. The engine has 255k miles on it.

I have a thread bookmarked on my desktop for someone who set up a timer that is triggered after the engine shuts down and runs the electric fan for 90 seconds after the key is turned off. Seems like it was just enough to help extract a little more heat after the engine turns off.

Everybody telling me to do it warm was because of metal expanding and as you said getting a better seal I guess. My '01 FSM just goes to 9-61 and then jumps right to 11 which is Exhaust. I will have to go through it to see if I can find the specs in there under the Engine section like you did. Thank you for narrowing that down for me.

Bought it! Back in the XJ world...lol.

I found a one owner '99 Limited. The original owner bought it new and passed away this past Dec. It has 201k but runs well. Every option but heated seats. It has its normal parking lot ding but has never been off road.

Speaking of heated seats.

So some of you might remember that I picked up some power, both sides, heated seats with the harness and switches. So I played with them today. Also had an extra passenger side power seat base that I picked up in my travels. Now I already put a power seat in the drivers side. Thinking one of the gears is stripped in the motor in the driver side base. The one that does the tilt in the back. I don't need that seat so it does not matter. Both passenger sides ones work. The switch was bad in the one that came with the heated seats. Had an extra switch and it works fine. The one I picked up separate was fine as is. So when I tried to use the heater part all that would happen is the high indicator would blink for both seats. Did not matter if I hit low or high. Only the high would light up and blink. Meaning there is a problem some where. The white box you see on the passenger power seat base is called a SHIM. Forgot what it stands for. There is also a relay there. I tried combinations of both to see if the seats would operate. No joy. Thinking that all of them could not be bad started checking the seat heating elements. I found two that did not have continuity. There is only one element in the upright parts. Those were fine. See the last shot for what the connector looks like. I tore apart one seat. There are two in the bottom part. One up front where you legs hang over, see shot 5, and one in the back half more where you butt is. See shots 2 and 6. Also in that section is what I think is a temp sensor. See shot 1. Shot 7 is all the wires that come out of the bottom part. Now unfortunately because of old plastic being so brittle I might have messed up the passenger side switch beyond repair. And obviously because I ripped up the bottom of that one seat to get at the heating element it can't be used. But I think I have an idea. Take the wiring and sandwich it between to pieces of whatever fabric they use to make aftermarket heated seat elements. Of course I have to fix some of the wiring first. And try to repair or source another switch.

Finally got my specialty plates the other day....oh and the sun shade really has helped keep the interior manageable heat levels.

Gotta love when companies are on the ball. Remember my OTC Leak Down Tester dilemma. Well that Saturday I called the 800#'s of OTC and the online company that sold me the tool. Closed for business. No surprise there. Figured I would just deal with it today. OTC had an customer support email so figured send one out on Saturday. Come home today and already had an offer to mail me a new hose. Just needed my address. Here is the weird thing. I kinda think I emailed the wrong department. Yet somebody was on the ball and forwarded it to the right place. If this hose works thinking if I need a tool see if OTC sells it first.

I almost finished my rear hitch gas can/ spare tire carrier. I just have to add the end of axle to bolt the spare tire to. It is rated at 500 lbs. I can fold it back to a 45 degree angle so I can open the rear hatch and access the interior. 2- 3 gallon rotopax now with the ability to add 2 more 2 gallon rotopax. $110 invested not including the rotopax and roto mounts.
