I had a spring but took it off because it let the antenna beat against the XJ when offloading. My antenna was flexible enough to unseat from branches. If you go with a spring you'll want to retune for SWR after install.

After I bolted it up I kinda wondered that myself. Poking around the internet was not very helpful. First shot is how I bolted it to the bottom of the tranny crossmember. Grabbed that off the internet. 2 holes in the skid lined up with 2 predrilled holes from the factory. Perfect size for 5/16" rivnuts. Problem it did not line up with the one hole on the unibody that I thought was for it. See the second shot I got off the internet. Slight adjusment, drilled an 1/2" hole and put rivnut in there too. Then there is this shot that I grabbed. See how he bolted it into the lip on the crossmember. I asked this before. Are there different plates for 231's and 242's? Does a 242 hang lower? Not like I wheel the Jeep. Not even sure why I put them on. Welcome any input.

I don't recall if the transfer cases sit at different heights. I have had both of them in my red Jeep and don't remember noticing any real difference, but then again I wasn't looking that hard. If I remember I'll compare my girlfriends XJ with the 242 to my XJ with the 231 when I get home.

If you remember. Thinking that this skid came off a Jeep with a 242. Thing is you look up part #'s and pretty sure there is only one part # for the skid.

Same part number, same skid. They hang pretty low and have a reputation as mud scoops, though i think they're supposed to be about the same height as the crossmember. Any chance it wound up installed funny or maybe got bent up somehow before you got ahold of it?

There is a thread floating around where a dude cut the skid along the line of the crossmember and bolted it through the lip instead in order to tuck it up a bit better.

Side note: Where did you get the rivnuts for the crossmember? I've actually got a stock skid sitting around I've been meaning to install.

Lifted, Locked, Stiffened

I am pretty sure I installed it right. Really only goes on one way but guess anything is possible. Also it is pretty solid. Don't think it is tweaked but again maybe it is. I found that thread about the guy cutting the skid when I was trying to find shots of factory skids, on the internet, to see if this is the way it is or I am either doing something wrong or there is something wrong with it. Thing is I could not find any shots that helped.

Rivnuts came with my Astro 1442.

https://www.amazon.com/Astro-Pneumat...4%7CB00HZBX1OO

And just to have it I bought the 3/8-16 mandrel

https://www.amazon.com/Astro-Pneumat...PP50KM0W22NV5C

Bought the mandrel from Amazon but got the rivnut tool from Jet.com for like $55. When you sign up with them you get 15% of your first 3 orders. How scored my IR 231C air impact for $113 tax included.

I used the 5/16-18 cause that is a common Grade 8 size and you need a 1/2" hole to use them. Which was the size of the hole in the tranny crossmember. I figure when I need more rivnuts Amazon or Ebay looks like the best bets.

I did not... haha. Sorry. But it sounds like there's only one version of the skid anyway.

I had a couple hours after work to work on the silver Jeep tonight before dinner. Finished welding up the drivers side fender, folded the quarter panel, and then sealed it all up. Need to pick up another piece of aluminum to seal up the passenger side quarter panel.

I was originally planning to weld a piece of steel to the quarter panel, but it was going to be tough to weld it all upside down. The seam sealer worked really well on my red Jeep, so I decided to go that route again. Plus, the aluminum won't rust!
