Looking at buying a tow rig. Diesel advice

Hey all,

On he last wheelin trip to the Badlands this past weekend, my ring gear and pinion decided it wanted to part ways, so i was stuck with 2wd. A lot of the guys had tow rigs and trailers at the NAXJA WinterFest, and I feel like it is about time to step up to a rig as well.

I am planning on retiring the XJ for the summer and pulling it off the road so I can slowly put her back together, and drive something a little more reliable on the roads.

Some requirements:
  • Must be a diesel - why? who doesn't love a diesel?
  • Must be atleast a 1/2 ton of course and comfortably tow a flat bed trailer and a XJ (maybe 2)
  • Reliability - It needs to be reliable and be able to run for many years to come
  • Power - has to have power. Because who doesnt love power?
  • Reliablitiy - Did I mention it needs to be reliable?
  • Price - I am trying to keep my monthly loan payment under $300 a month. So I am looking for something in the $13,000 to $16,500 range.
  • Newer than a 95 and under 125,000 miles would be nice.

So far, this is the best option I have found.
Determining extended properties...

It does seem overpriced though. NADA value on it is just a hair over $13,000. So if I could talk him down to $14,00 to $15,000 I feel like I would have gotten a pretty good deal. I've heard good things about the 5.9L Turbo Diesel motors and with under 100K it should have some pretty good life left.

What do you guys think? I am going to take it out for a test drive tomorrow morning. What do you think of the Dodge's and 2500s in general?

-Brendan

If you buy a Cummins from this era, make sure to add a "pusher pump" for the fuel, ideally you can buy a filter unit with a pusher pump built in, such as a FASS or Airdog unit. Why you ask? The high pressure fuel pump on this generation of Cummins engines (known as a VP-44 pump) is prone to scoring and severe internal damage if you ever lose fuel pressure due to a failure of the engine-mounted lift pump, and the damage occurs fast. A new VP-44 is several thousand dollars to replace. Adding a pusher pump/filter unit will prevent this from ever happening in the first place, so you can enjoy many hundreds of thousands of miles out of your engine.

My buddy the Diesel nut says go with a 98-99 12V Cummins.

Now the Dodge I am going to go look at tomorrow is a 24 valve, any downside to this motor?

I just sold my 99 ram 2500 24 valve diesel a year ago. I regret it but the economy wouldn't let me keep 4 vehicles. I loved it and was very happy with the power. About 6 months after selling it the same thing TJJP77 was talking about happened to it and the new owner had to replace both pumps, it was mega expensive, but he loves the truck and didn't mind. I never had any problems with it at all in the 10 years I owned it. It had plenty of power and would pull my 19 foot bassboat without realizing it was even back there. One problem on the 2nd generation rams though is the cracking dash. Mine cracked all over the place and I hated it, but couldn't afford to replace it at the time. I am saving up for a 03-up model 1500 now with a gas engine because the road I live on is very rough and the 2500 isn't very forgiving on rough roads.I don't haul anything heavy enough to justify another 3/4 ton deisel anyway. Good luck and hope you find a good one, I let mine go for 9500 with 118,000 miles on it and other than the dash it was in mint condition at the time.

Sorry - should have clarified....1998.5 - 2002 24 valve Cummins engines use the VP-44 high pressure fuel pump that is sensitive to being run dry. Beginning in 2003, they switched to High Pressure Common Rail injection.

Also, look out for a "pattern 53" block - they are prone to cracking. More info here:

53 Block FAQ and Information

Essentially what happens is that the water jacket cracks from fatigue and coolant leaks externally.

I test drove the 01 Dodge 2500 Cummins today, drove extremely nice. Didn't find a speck of rust on this thing. Plenty of power, shifts very smoothly, sounds awesome, turbo spools great. Brand new tires and fresh brakes. Engine compartment is very clean, the entire suspension looks like it just rolled off the assembly line. I just have to find the right loan and see if the guy will take 15,000 instead of 17,900.
