an annoyance when starting my xj

when starting my 99 2 dr, 4.0. 4wd automatic.

turn the key, engine rolls over and it won't start.

Turn if off and turn the key for the second time and it starts right up. Runs smooth, no issues

But sometimes it won't really start, but acts like it is only hitting on one or two cylinders, turn it off and then turn the key ans she starts right up.

Runs smooth, getting 18 mpg, everything works, No codes.

So what do you make of this? I feel that one day I am going to have a problem, just trying to stay ahead of the game.

check fuel pressure with a gauge -

turn key to ON observe and post highest fuel pressure, leave key ON post fuel psi after 5 minutes.

Check codes post all codes you have.

When it will not start - can you with a helper check for spark, pulsing injectors.

When I see the price of OEM I think aftermarket.
When I see the quality of aftermarket I think OEM.

Next time its been sitting overnight, turn the key to on but dont start, wait 3 seconds, key off and back on wait a sec then try to start.
I bet it will start perfectly.
I think that its the one way valve in the fuel regulator letting fuel drain back into the tank.

I use the seat belt buzzer as a timer. Key on...buzzer stops...start the engine.
