Couldn't find the old Jeep thread, questions about TJ to JKU

Long story short, I had a YJ back in the day, had to sell it in college, and always wanted another one. I bought my 2004 TJ in the summer of 2012. Thought I would drive it for a long time. But my family will be growing from 4 to 5 in a few months, and the appeal of 4 doors and a full width backseat accessible from the doors, plus the storage in the back is getting to me.

I never thought I would own a 4 door Jeep and used to say that they are an abomination. Now I'm rethinking it. I've made the TJ work when we went from 1 child to 2, and I may just end up keeping it as the times we'd have the whole family in it are probably not many. As it is now I drive my daughter to school, and this fall I'll take my son as well. So she can help unlatch him from the booster/carseat during carpool dropoff. There's just very little chance the baby will be riding with me ever. We have a minivan for that. But that emergency where I would have to put him back there is gnawing at me. I could keep a carseat stowed in the back if I needed to latch it in.

Doesn't have a hardtop, but I live in Alabama so that only gets used about 3-4 months of the year now on my TJ, so not a deal breaker. Also saw a 2011 but it had higher miles. Not looking to buy soon, but starting to watch sites more now.

If you get a JKU, go with 2012 or newer for the better engine alone. My brother went through the same dilemma. He bought a brand new 4 door in 2015 for the reasons you mentioned. He loved that Jeep for the room and ride comfort. Now his wife drives it exclusively and he drives the lifted TJ I sold him. He says the TJ is just more fun to drive. TJ is 5 speed and JK is auto.

This thread originated in the tire/wheel forum, and I didn't see a question.

+1 on getting a 2012 or newer for the 3.6L V6. The 3.8L is slow and drinks oil.

I think 5 speed auto was the best of what they did to the 12s+. if the 3.8 had that 5 speed auto it would be like going from 4.1 gears to 5.13 about. It can handle WAY more input torque then any trans put in a jeep before it as well.

3.6 is not without issues too. head issues, oil canister/cooler issues. valve train issues. casting issues. To date only the head issues is party acknowledged by Fopar. they did extend the warranty on the left head, the right one? pound sand they left in them....

Tjs are like a Cow girl. Jks more like fashion model , high maintenance.....
