Dodge Durango Power steering gearbox

im planning on getting a dodge durango power steering gearbox to replace my old factory one that keeps breaking seals. and plus iw as looking for more power in the steering once i upgrade to bigger tires. should i know anything else beside to get one off a 318 V8, within the years of 1997-1998. do i go with the one with the snowplow package or not?

when in doubt, press the skinny pedal!

I pulled one off a 1998 V8 in the local junkyard. I think I've had it on their for 3 years now? Maybe longer. I can turn on a dime! Easy install, and my old steering box skid plate fit as well. And... never leaks. Hope this helps.

Yeah, after I replaced it, I noticed less play. But I think that was just because my original stock box was so f'd that anything would seem better. haha Either way, it is easier to turn and beefier than the stocker. It's definitely an upgrade.

Another satisfied Jeeper with a Durango box here! I bought a reman unit from autozone for somewhere in the neighborhood of $150. It's served me well for about 5 years now. My Jeep turns on a dime, does not leak and has less play in the steering than with the old, worn-out TJ box.

hey so i got a question . i just picked up a durango gearbox from a u pull it yard and im hoping this thing is as stout as everyone is saying and has no issues. but my ps pump is going out as well. so.... would anyone recommend replacing it with the stock ps pump or something a little more HD higher flow and more pressure? something like this. although this looks nothing like the factory one. AGR-812256 - AGR High Performance Steering Super Pump For 1997-04 Jeep Wrangler And Cherokee with 4.0L Engine | Discount Jeep Parts . any help on the issue would be greatly appreciated.

I did the durango swap last year. I bought it from autozone and it was a reman also. It recently slipped a gear inside the box and now i can barely turn right. I am looking to put another one in this weekend. I paid a shop the first time, but I am going to do it myself this time.
The jeep turns much better the the durango box in there.

We did this swap out this last weekend. Was pretty easy on my 98 TJ. There were a few 98 Durango V8's that we found at our local pick n pull. From experience (now) bring either a pit arm puller or a pickle fork to remove the pit arm off the front steering linkage or the steering box. we were lucky enough to find a 2" diameter steel pipe to pop it off. Oh and don't use the castle nut on the screw and a hammer to try and loosen this part. we pounded it so much we couldn't get the castle nut off the steering linkage and had to go to the next car and start all over again. One surprise we did find at the junk yard was in the first car we choose someone had removed the steering fluid box and left the steering cooler (it's like a radiator for the steering fluid). I have not hooked that up to my jeep yet, but think it would be great help on the trail.

I've heard many success stories about the Durango steering box but I've also heard there is some loss of turning radius.

Is this true?

Can you tell me what year range Durango this works on? There are a few Durango's on craigslist that are parting out. One is a 01'. Also would a Dakota work?

You want one from a 1998-1999 Durango 4x4 without the snow plow option. I don't know about the 2001 but my 2004 has rack and pinion steering no box. I did the Durango upgrade the steering feels much better , turns with less turns lock to lock with no loss in turning circle.
