What's my 97 TJ Worth?

I just bought a beautiful 97 TJ 2 months ago. 4.0L, 5 speed manual with a real 19K miles on it. FL vehicle, NO rust on the frame or body. The only rust is on the axles and axle, suspension brackets which I have sanded, primed and painted black. It is in pristine condition, original paint, always garaged. Stock height, no lift with 31 X 10.50 15 tires and wheels. I searched 2 years to find it, love the old TJ's so very much.

I am trying very hard to hang on to it but may not be able to. I had a nice restoration early Bronco project go about as bad as can be, got scammed for 11K, it's a mess and a story of it's own- and getting worse and family is involved now. So I may need to pull the plug on that and sell the Wrangler in order to move and get away from this awful mess.

List it on CraigsList at whatever price you want to get for it and see how it goes. If you need to sell it fast, you may not get what you want, or would if you had time to wait for the right buyer to come among.

This is called a "distressed sale", and generally work in favor of the buyer.

Its value is defined by what a willing buyer/seller agree on.

Book value is 5K but I paid a whole lot more for it and see that other TJ's with much more mileage more for more than 5k.

It will have to be a distressed sale or give it away to someone. The mess I am is awful and I have no where to keep it.

Again, it all depends on how fast and how much you really want it gone. Looking at your history, your not new to buying/selling jeeps or vehicles, and at your age, certainly old enough to understand how life works.

Maybe if there is a "consignment dealer" in your area. Give it to them, they store it, show it, and sell it for you, all for a fee. While you get work on the other issues.

I am multi-talented, I can talk and piss you off at the same time.

You could get $10,000 for it where I live and with the low miles.

I don't know about 10k, but I could see 8k around here. IMO people often give too much value for low miles on TJs. Rust free is worth as much or more IMO.

I'd fly to Fl. and drive it back for $8000. It has to have AC though.

$5k is absurd. Rusty TJ's with 175,000 miles sell for more.

$10k is still too low. Are there even any comps for a 97 4.0 with ~19k miles? Doesn't sound like you have time, but if you did I would start at $15k and see what happens. If you list it at $10k I'd bet it will be gone in a day. $8k and it's gone in an hour, maybe hour and a half.

Why can't the Jeep come with? Tow it? Ship it? Store it until things shape up?

I'd offload the Mustang or Fiesta long before getting rid of the Jeep. Neither one of the Fords will ever be worth more than they are at this very moment while Wranglers have demonstrated they will maintain their value.

Rubicons and well built TJs sell at this level. Even crappy LJs. Like I said above, there are people that attribute too much value to low mileage on TJs.

A friend of mine bought a 98' with 12,000 miles for $10,000 from a large dealership. He planned on keeping it forever though, so it's his money.

Yes, people do. But it doesn't matter that people over value mileage. The point is that they do and for the purposes of answering the OP (what can I sell it for?) he should know that.

Depending on the mods Rubicons, built TJ's, and LJ's sell for $15k with far more miles. At 19k miles the Rubicon and LJ would be over $20k.

Wranglers are way over priced. I would never pay any of these prices. I would never pay what I could get for my Jeep. But the OP is asking what he can sell it for, not what we would pay for it.

4.0? I'd say he did fine. What would a 12k mile 98 have gone for in 99? $18k? It will last him a long time.

I'd say somewhere around $12 or $13k.
