Thoughts on which year/series to buy

Fairly new to Jeeps and off-roading. Own a 2020 4-door Willy's JLU, and just spent the weekend at Bantam Festival in Butler, PA. Was super impressed at how capable a bone stock Jeep was, other than scraping the bottom on just about everything on the blue trails. Immediately started thinking about upgrading to get some ground clearance, but figured it would make more sense to buy an older Jeep that I can work on upgrading, more of a toy than a vehicle I need to depend on for day to day driving.

So, I'm looking into what years or models would be a good starting point to build something that is capable for weekend off-roading trips. Not looking to go crazy just yet with a super high lift, just want something I can wrench on at home, and take out to have fun with on the weekends. Budget is under $5k.

under 5k wont buy much. Be very careful at that price or any really when talking older jeeps. Rust will break your budget. would be very hard to find a jeep that runs and is not rusted out for 5k today.

in general Yjs ( square head lights) tend to be in the lower cost, but that is changing as well. Cjs are another option but at 5k it tends to be 3x that to get it in shape.

Tjs are when jeep went coils, these in good/fair shape today are getting 10-15k.

when a new one can be 70k ,15k sounds like a deal.... Location matters too, salt belt areas wont be easy to find something that wont need a frame and body, basically build a new jeep from the rust.
