Odometer was tweaked

Just a word of warning. When buying a Jeep do your home work.
I recently saw an ad for an 02 TJ with 68,000 miles that appeared to be in great shape. The ad and the picture of the odometer showed 68,000 miles.

I pulled a car fax and sure enough the Jeep had a reported milage of 180,000 last year and 68,000 this year.
The report indicated the 180,000 thousand was correct.
Looks like the seller or a prior owner changed the instrument cluster and the computer.

It's best not to rush take your time and end up with a decent rig from an honest seller.

Maybe, or maybe a mistake was made on the paperwork. I bought a motorcycle who's title said it had over 200k miles on it, when it should have been 2k. I got it fixed, but it is still in the dmv system at the wrong number.

No this was not a paperwork error. Car Fax showed the mileage over the years go up sequentially to 180,000 miles. The next and latest report and the odometer showed about 68,000 miles. I became suspicious when I saw how worn the pedals were. This was a scammer for sure hence my post.

How could a Jeep with 180K even look like it had a third less miles?

In this case the pedals showed the wear. I never went to see the Jeep I was looking at CL pictures.
FWIW a garage kept well cared for Jeep can look pretty darn good with high miles.

The whole point of my original post was to warn first time buyers to do their due diligence.
What appears to be a great deal may not be so. There are scammers out there.

Still could be an explanation. TJs store their mileage in the pcm computer and in the display cluster, which is what people see. When the vehicle is taken in for diagnostic service, the pcm mileage is read.

If the cluster or pcm was changed out at some point, due to failure or scam, the two milages won't be the same.

I am multi-talented, I can talk and piss you off at the same time.
