Looking for first Jeep

Looking for my first Jeep. Wrangler or even a CJ. Not wanting to spend a bunch of money, say $3000 or less. I'm not new to working on vehicles and am looking for more of a light project I guess than a basket case. Basically I want something I can flat tow behind my motorhome for the back roads in northern Michigan and ride around my home town topless in the summer. I have a pretty well equipped shop including MIG welder and Plasma cutter, Bead roller, shrinker/stretcher, homemade press brake for a 20 ton press, bigger manual brake from my racing days. I don't think I would be afraid to tackle frame issues.

My goal is a pretty stock vehicle, no carpet/truck bed lined interior, maybe some 31's and a cargo net to keep the dogs from falling out the back. I just really have no knowledge of this platform.
Am I to understand that it is better to flat tow a manual as opposed to an automatic?

Not sure about the older ones but towing a newer Jeep with the auto is easy. Transmission in park, transfer case in neutral and go.

With a manual, it needs to be the stock transfer case. Some thing that has been upgraded to an Atlas will require pulling the driveshafts on the stick.

Thanks for the info. Found 3 different vehicles in an hour radius I think I may go look at this weekend. A 94 that will need some reassembly, sounds like the current owner is just giving up on.

A 86 CJ7 that has some body rust, and a 47 Willys with a Fiberglass tub that doesn't run. Im really more excited about the older ones to be honest. With a little luck I will sell the 71 VW bus project that I grew bored with since my dogs are too big in my opinion to camp in it.

Well , only got to look at the 86 CJ7 this weekend. LOTS of rust in the tub but I think I could fix it if I put my mind too it. The shifter was not as precise as my 05 Ranger, loose is the best way I can describe it. Looks like the rear seal on the Dana 300 is leaking, I suspect that would be s straight forward fix, Has soft and hard tops, got the Family roll bar already in it. looks like a suspension lift. Spent some time underneath it and found no frame issues. Has extra seats and hard doors and a full cover. We drove it around town and it drove ok, but I don't have anything to compare it to, except a short drive I took in a Mahindra Roxor. I have read the issues with flat towing with a Dana 300. Sold my 71 VW bus Friday so I have the funds available to get this and have some left over for repairs.
