'99 & 2000 XJ: what's out there to replace them? And, yes, I think this is technical

Subject says part of it: We run 2 XJ's: one 1999 and one 2000. Latter being my wife's. Both over 200K on the clock now. She's beginning to worry about long trips, reliability, wear, age, etc., etc. We're retired, so no longer young to deal with things going wrong. (But I still work on vehicles some) Wife's health is not great, so on-road problems really hit her hard. SO....we looked at current production Cherokees, (NOT Grand Cherokees), a year or so back. Ran away fast with reports on the 9-speed software laden transmission that did things like, "red-line," when pulling out from an intersection. To shorten the feelings we have, I just don't trust the Fiat influence now invading MoPar products. I do not see any current, "old-reliable-Cherokee-like," Jeeps currently trustworthy for replacing our vehicles. We are, in fact, so dis-enchanted with the new Jeeps, at a recent Spokane, WA Auto Show, we did not even stop to look at Jeeps. Most attractive option we found was a Mazda CX-5. Can you imagine that?? We'll keep our old XJ's, but what in the world do we consider for our, (likely) last late/new purchase? Off Topic here? I don't think so, because it is our tech minded forum guys/gals that understand where vehicles are headed.
Now: what would YOU replace your XJ with if you had to look at current options??????
Thanks, Dennis in E WA state

I'm in the same boat as you, I don't like anything post WJ. I'd suggest you go on CARGURUS or EBAY and find a couple of low mileage XJ;s. They're out there. You can find them with 50-100k, if you don't mind paying 5k-10k.

I got two XJ's and a WJ, I plan rebuilding both. My wife has a Jeep Cherokee 2015 which she bought with 20k on the odometer. Started out with a cracked tranny which they replaced free of charge. After that nothing. She now has 55k on the odometer.

Ford Explorer. Dealerships are located in most smaller towns and all larger cities. Parts are commonly available, and repair shops are familiar with them.

Junkyards have lots of good used parts to choose from should there be a need.

.

A recent Gallup public opinion poll shows the NRA, at 58% approval, has a higher approval rating than either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.
