77 Jeep J10

School me on the pitfalls of what to watch out for on a 77 J10. Have one available with a relatively good looking body, seller says it needs a carb tune up. 258 I6 3 spd manual $4200

Thoughts?

Have you seen this J10? Typically (not always) when a seller says it only needs "blah, blah, blah" there is more to it than that. I am not familiar with the selling price of J10 so can not say that 4200 is a good price, but doesn't sound bad IF you want a J10. What is the purpose of this purchase? Can you do your own work? Do you have emissions in your state and will it pass emissions?

Everything else can be fixed by someone with even mild automotive knowledge after some reading, some purchasing of tools, and some youtube videos. Metal work takes a lot more expertise and practice to do well.

Avoid Rust if you can.

Does it have a low range? My 79 Cherokee with the 360 didn't have one. If they show you a button to turn in the dash that's not low range. If it has a small lever on the driver side hump or a regular 4w lever with a low on it's good.

You're thinking of the Quadratrac, which is seen behind the automatic transmission. The manual trans should have a D20 behind it.

X2 on the rust.

Be advised that while the 258 is an excellent engine, it is a bit under powered in the J series trucks.

Insure everything body related works. Dash panels, gauges, window regulators, etc are getting harder to find.

Swap the 4.2 head for the 4.0 and then fuel inject it...that makes an excellent vehicle out of it.
