2005 Wrangler Burning Oil

I am looking to purchase a 2005 Wrangler Sport Edition. The seller advised he checks the oil every couple of weeks and if it needs it he tops it off 1/4 of a quart at most. He said he spoke to a Jeep Mechanic who basically said this was normal its a Jeep. Also passenger side carpet is damp after a hard rain if left outside. New top, new shocks, 3 lift. It has 98,000 miles on it. Would you recommend I run away from this or is it a non issue? Thank you!

Kelly

For having 98k on the clock, I wouldn't expect the Jeep to consume oil like that. The 4.0L engine is rather well known for leaking at the rear main seal or valve cover though, so that'd be a bit more likely cause for adding oil in my opinion -- look for wetness or evidence of an oil leak at the bottom of the valve cover and near the back of the oil pan where the engine meets the transmission. My general rule of thumb has always been it's not out of line for an engine to use or leak up to one quart of oil per 3000 miles. If the oil loss is due to a leak and you're going to pay somebody else to fix it for you, figure anywhere from $200-500 most likely to have it done. The damp floor after a rain is a common issue with Wranglers and usually quite fixable, it just might take a little ingenuity to find exactly where the water is coming in.
