Tire size help

Hey everyone!

I need your experience/opinion. I recently just bought my first ever Jeep Wrangler (2012 Unlimited Sport) last weekend, and I am looking to purchase some winter tires. The Jeep came with brand new Hercules Terra Trac MT tires (285/75R16 - 32.8" diameter) and I'd like to swap those out for a dedicated set of winter tires. Where I'm from, we get lots of ice, and these bad boys are terrible on ice. I also do a significant amount of highway driving a few times a winter to go back home, which involves a 6 hour drive up north where there is colder, more "wintery" weather (I am from Ontario, Canada).

I'm in a bit of a dilemma right now. I could get winter tires in the same size, however, I can't seem to find cheap steel rims that would have the correct width for those tires. I would have to purchase alloys/aluminum, and I don't want to spend 180$ on rims that will get eaten up by the salt here.

So my next option would be to get a 265/70R17 - 31.6" diameter Bridgestone Blizzak DMV2 tire. I would then need to get my speedometer recalibrated every tire swap for 60$.

Or, I could get the same Blizzak DMv2 in 265/70R18 - 32.6" diameter, and not need to pay 60$ every tire swap.

Only thing I worry about is the reduced tire sidewall. Is that a huge deal?

Do you guys have any other opinions on what I should do? I don't really want a Duratrac or anything like that, looking for a winter-dedicated tire.
