SYE/CV List

Alright y'all, I need your brains...What is a good, middle of the road setup? I don't know exactly what I need as far as a driveshaft...double cardon...and what is a good SYE? Helping me set up a SYE/CV list would be great, thanks y'all for the help!

Give Donald a call at www.dc4wd.com, he will give you a great deal on a SYE/CV combo and he can answer any questions you may have. You will also need rear adjustable upper control arms. I went with the nth degree mobility ones due to price and their ability to be adjusted after being installed. Dirk at www.dpgoffroad.com is a good source for them.

If you're doing the OME lift and getting the 31" tires you may not need the SYE/ CV setup. However, if you do, this is generally what's needed:
  • Slip Yoke Eliminator Kit or "Hack 'n Tap"
  • Double Cardan (CV) rear driveshaft
  • Adjustable Upper Rear Control Arms
Typically, with the SYE they come with a replacement output shaft and you have to open up the transfercase. Often these SYE's can be had with stronger rear shafts and such.

Hack 'n Taps are usually easier to install. You basically remove the rear slip yoke from the back of the t-case (pull the driveshaft), and cut the output shaft down to size (the "hack"). Then drill a whole in the center of the shaft and tap it to form some threads. Finally bolting a fixed yoke onto the end of the shaft. It's reported these have been holding up VERY well over the years. They are also about $100 less than the SYE kits. I believe Rubicon Express as well as other manufactures make them.

The Adjustable UCA (upper control arms) for the rear are needed so that you can adjust your pinion angle (rotate the rear axle) to line up with the rear driveshaft angle. Nth Degree Mobility makes a great set at a very reasonable price ($137). They come with the stock rubber TJ bushings and can be adjusted AFTER installation. Many other require that the control arm be disconnected and then adjusted.

Hey thanks you guys, y'all are great...Preciate the contacts and info...I'm not sure what to go w/...I just have very slight vibrations in 2nd gear around 3000 rpm after the tcase drop...I drive the jeep typically mild to hard...and I just worry i'm going to ruin my driveline...This might be overkill, but im certainly considering an SYE/CV w/ uppers...I've heard the mml/bl way is ok, but i'd rather get this right the first go around....So if you have anymore suggestions, y'all let me know! Thanks again!

Alright, i'm about ready to break down and by the setup...Quick question for all those who know. I won't be doing a hack N tap, rather some along the lines of JB conversion SYE or AA...I'm not sure yet...Can someone give me a rough estimate on the money i'm about to spend? I believe donald from dc4wd quoted me $430 for a AA SYE and a Tom woods driveshaft...Seems like an awful lot. Plus I have to get the Nth degree adjustable control arms. Provided Joel or someone is nice enough and willing to help, labor costs shouldn't be so much of a problem. So am I correct in assuming this will be around $600 bucks to do??? So if you don' t mind, swing me your opinion and if my setup sounds decent and let me know if this price is way more than it should be. Thanks again y'all.

If you've done any research, you would know that $430 is a great price. Nth degree arms will set you back another $140, so yeah, its going to cost around 6 bills.

if you want to save some coin, get a front driveshaft out of a cherokee and take it to a driveshaft shop and have them cut it down to size for you.

I got my Advanced Adapters HD SYE kit for $230 (three years or so ago)
got a cherokee shaft from a pick n pull for 20 bucks
and had a shaft shop cut it down and re-balance it for me for 75 bucks

been running this set up for 3 years or so now and never had an issue with it

Yeah, you are welcome to some free labor if you don't mind buying lunch. I did the JB SS SYE and it ended up being about $600 Stew. $299 for the SYE, $80 for the signal converter and $214 for the driveshaft from a local driveshaft shop. $430 isn't a bad price at all. If you get the Nth adjustable uppers make sure to get the 9" tubes as the 10" will be too long for your lift.

What about rear trackbar? Don't you need a trackbar relo bracket with an angle in it for the pinion angle change? I would think an adj rear trackbar would work too. But SOMETHING needs to be done to address the binding that will happen from the pinion angle change.

$200 for a JB Conversions SYE (ordering direct from JB), and $150 for a local shop to make a shaft. The Tom Woods shafts that everyone sells online are freakin expensive. They're good, but you don't need to spend that much for a good shaft. Ask some local clubs for a good shop in your area, there's really no reason to spend that much on a driveshaft (and the shipping, and the waiting to get it...).

If your lucky enough to find a shop that will build a quality CV shaft for $150, you had better jump on it. No one around here would build one for less than $200. I bought mine from Curtis Tatton's shop (801-685-0056) for $235 shipped.

Alright, well i've done the research, and all of y'all have been a massive help, thanks for the responses...but one final question! W/ lookin at 600+ dollars right now, i'm not finanicial able to do anything at the moment, maybe looking at a summer project for the sye/cv....My jeep, as the suspension has worn in, has seem to rid itself of vibes. I know a SYE/CV is still a better option, but i'm not going to hurt my jeep if I put off the install am I? Will just the tcase drop hurt my jeep? I don't want to end up w/ bigger problems! Thanks again y'all, you have all be an awesome help!
